I picked up a super cheap 318 and tranny with no real plan on what to do with it. Bone stock engine from a 1985 5th Ave with 302 heads. What carb/intake/cam combo that would be worth the time and money (don’t have much of either). I’m hoping to get 250-300 hp out of this thing.

That is a good question that I would have to answer a probable NO to, BUT, do not let that stop your search. Start in the classified section here.

With the recent up swing in new manifold prices, used manifolds have also risen. Figure on $200 for each item.

To save some money, you could run a stock cast iron 340 intake. I have several I would sell for little of nothing but shipping to CA would be expensive.

That should be a roller cam motor.

A little spendy on a roller cam, but you should be able to reuse the roller lifters.

You can get a more efficient cam, with much faster ramps and not worry about break-in.

A standard LA intake will work, like the ubiquitous "Performer", which can be had very cheap.

Bolting on a performer intake with a 5-600 cfm edelbrock carb and a set of headers should put you at 250 pretty easily for not much money invested. They run suprisingly well set up that way.

Score! I wish you were closer. We could make a deal on the whole works. If I were you, I wouldn't put a dime in it. A few hundred dollars of bolt-ons won't make it worth much more than it's worth today. A 85 with 302 heads, roller cam, and a lock up 904 tranny should be worth $300 in my book. Start a sale thread and sell that thing!

318 2bbl was listed as 230 hp gross. Gross is how Dyno's measure hp. A good 4bbl on top of a good engine with headers and duals would really help it breathe. Not all '85's had roller cams, but I don't think you'd need a cam swap for your goals.

Just look at CL, Ebay, right here on FABO, or Face book. Deals can be had on all this stuff.

you read it how I read it at first, that he would like to sell it for 250-300. Then, I realized he may be looking for 250-300 horsepower instead :)

Oops. I thought the "I’m hoping to get 250-300 out of this thing" was sell it for dollars and not about horsepower. LOL

I'm kind of like The Godfather on all this. I've had too many experiences where people join the forum to suck all my information out of me and proof they made there profit and gone. You don't even offer your hand in friendship then want me to do this deed for you...

Yep, like mentioned, A Performer, Weiand, or LD4B (if you could find one), a 600 Edelbrock, and a Mopar Electronic distributor to get rid of the factory Lean Burn would be a great start.

Hello I'm such and such from such and such and this is a picture of my car and I would like some help with the new engine I got. I've been watching The Forum for some time and finally got a project I can share blah blah blah, blah blah blah, blah blah blah.. thank you for everybody's help in the future and tickle your nuts blah blah blah...

It took some time and patience, but I got both the Performer and electric choke 1406 carb for 100 total so they are around if you just watch on CL and on here like mentioned.

Someone has misled my brain over the years I thought the transition started in 89??

You don't even need the performer. If you can find (I bet you can) a factory spread bore (Thermoquad) manifold, the carb of your choice.

Wasn't it at the same time the compression was reduced on pretty much all the engines?

You guys are putting us moderators in a tough spot. The OP was asking if anybody has parts for sale for cheap but didn't start a "wanted thread". There is good discussion here so I will treat the thread as a information thread and suggest that the new member start a "wanted" thread when he gets ready to pull the trigger. If you have parts he may be interested in send him a PM or wait for the wanted thread. Thanks

1970 or 1970, when CA started putting their emissions programs in force.

255HP is a 360 rating. The 360 switched to rollers in 1989.... the 318 started in '85. Amazing what you can learn here LOL: LA - Chrysler small block V8 engines

If the OP changes from rollers to flat tappets, then he could use the 6901 (that would not be my choice though) but would have to change pushrods.

Listing the 318 as HP gross ended... when... 1971? It then went down to a measly 155 HP net. That is reality.
But I don't know about the later roller engines.
yeah, but anytime anyone list what there motor produced on the dyno, or say they want to build a 400 hp small block, or a 250 hp 318, they are talking gross.

1972 was the start of net HP rating

Roller LA motors have advertised 9.2:1 compression

I had a 1988 5th Ave I hot-rodded the 318 a bit with. Roller-cam 318s were rated at 170 HP, 260 lb-ft NET. I made my own 2 1/4" duals off the stock manifolds (2" head pipes about 2' long off the outlets to keep the velocity up) and converted to a Performer intake with an old ThermoQuad, also got rid of the ELB/SCC and put in an MSD box and stock reman'd electronic distributor. I also changed the rear end to an 8 1/4" with 3.07 gears out of an XJ Jeep Cherokee like mine (stock was 2.21!!!). It scooted decent for being 3800 lbs but was still not much quicker than a modern economy car. I liked it though, kinda wish I kept that car but I really didn't have a need for it; super comfy interior with pillowtop seats and working automatic temp control for the heater and A/C (which also worked awesome) and pulled 18-20 MPG on the freeway.

A cam swap and headers would really wake it up, 250-300 HP should be pretty easy as the roller lifters, swirl-port heads and higher compression have a lot more potential than the older engines esp. late '70s those are the worst. I've also heard/read the production quality and tolerances got a lot better in the 1980s for the V-8s. Late-'80s roller cam engine is my personal choice for a core to build an LA SBM.
