What on earth is driving these tremendous pickup prices. I've rethought and re-re-re-rethought what to do, and how to go, and broadened my search. From a 4 whanger extended cab Ranger/ Mazda/ Tacoma, to a 4wd, to a moredoor hemi 1/2T RAM the prices are just ridiculous. I just got emailing some guy. Wanted 3G above the highest I could "click" on Kelly. I selected all the high priced spread, and came nowhere near to what he wants. This is a 6G truck he wants over 85 or more closer to 9G

There be a reason Ford ain't making cars now, and you are seeing it

Same here, my brother was looking at pickup's and prices are crazy. A new one now days cost more than I paid for my home. He ended up buying a Durango instead of a pickup because prices are so high.

I was looking on CL the other day, and I believe the guy was asking 13K for a 75 Chevy 1/2 T. PU. I thought that was awfully high.

I look at used prices around here and could drive over to Kellogg and get a brand new one for a couple grand more.

I bought a beater for $1800 and it truly was a beater, but that is what I was looking for and it was the cheapest I could find that was road worthy and ran. Trucks just hold their value. Ill never buy a new car or truck. Way to many junk collectors and gardeners here to buy the **** trucks as soon as they are for sale. Good for them for staying off the unemployment roster.

FWIW, I traded in a 2016 low mileage Toyota Tacoma in on a new Jeep grand Cherokee Limited last August and got way more for the trade-in than I expected. The truck was only 2 years old with only 11,000 miles. I paid $30,000 for it new, and I got $25,000 trade-in for it; and that was after getting about $7,000 off the car. I had done my research and that was a better deal than I expected. The Sales manager told me the price of clean trucks was up, and he would have no problem selling it.

I was truck buying last year, 3 year old Rams full load with 40,000 kms were going for $35k. I asked "WHY?" Every dealership told me they could and do ship them down to US. They can sell every used one to them for top dollar, basically sight unseen.
I said screw it and bought a "new" 2017 RAM dealer demo.
I'll trade/sell it in a couple years.

Fly to Vegas.

The prices are going up because everyone wants a pickup to mount their Machine guns on. Its an option seen in other countries that is getting popular here. Go get-um Trump. Hu-rah

This is the reason I nurse along this 71 Chevy C20 I have. It's a gas hog with a very thirsty 350 and lots of rust but gets the job done .I've been looking for a small 4 banger pick up for the past 2 years for this very reason. They are way over priced and all have pretty high mileage to boot.

Here's the price of a 2015 RAM Pickup in St John's, Nfld. Canada.

CARFAX Canada Buy report

Same deal as 4-speedragtop suggested. Most trucks here are being shipped to the USA. Bought sight unseen, buyers from there will take every unit we can ship !!

Same reason I bought my 2018 Ram. I was looking at 2-3 year old trucks, most of which had 75,000 plus miles on them, and were just about as much. My last new truck was a '95 that I bought in '96. I buy them to keep.
Just saw the post above. Mine is a Big Horn, Club Cab, pretty well loaded, 8 year/85,000 bumper to bumper, for another $4,000.

They wanted $36k for a 2014/15 Crew cab Big Horn. I bought a 17 Crew Cab(dealer demo with on 46 kms) for $35 with extended warranty. My 1st new truck. Not much bells and whistles but I dont gotta work in the damned thing! Wrenching on the vehicles when you have to is not much fun.

I just sold a 78 W-150 good running dependable truck, but ugly for 5k.
I am thinking now I sold it too cheap.

I have been selling cars for 32 years and its a mystery to me ! I just took a 2017 4Runner TRD -Pro in trade with 36k for within 6k of what the MSRP was new.
And this guy cried like a baby about how we were ripping him off ! I told him that after are finished detailing and safety checking it we will be in it a little less than the new price.... Why would anyone pay that much for a 2 year old car with 36k when they could just go buy a new one ? He had no response...
Turns out I have a long term customer with a son in Seattle looking for this exact car ! I had it sold before it hit the lot ! I didnt mark it up much because her and her husband have been really close for a long time .

Point is that consumers drive the market . And as long as there are consumers that will pay stupid prices this will happen.
A used car is not always the best deal.... usually but not always.

I have a 73 Chevy LB with a 250, 6 cyl. and 3 on the tree. Bought it in Indiana in Dec. 74. Came to Ca. in Jan. 75. It has 259K miles on it and had to have the engine rebuilt at 198K
because a thermostat stuck. This is the only truck I have ever owned. It would be long gone if I still lived in Indiana. Knock on wood. I have never touched the differential, not even
bearings.

I just leased (last August) a 2018 Ram 1500 Express Quad 4x4 . Listed for $44k . What? What is driving up the prices of used vehicles is new vehicles . supply and demand . FIY: a 1500 Express is one step up from a work truck but it has 13 computers in it . Too many people driving the truck besides me . stupid stuff I don't use . Also, I live in the rust belt and inspection stations reject vehicles with rust holes . this drives prices up for clean cars and trucks . I also have a 2000 Durango that is a money pit (electrical issues) . I have to put it out of is misery . third : the economy is booming and a lot of folks have $ to spend . Fourth: interest rates are relatively low right now , going up , though , people are aware of this and are jumping in before the increase . I lease mine because I'm sick of fixing shitboxes and when my lease is up I should have a Dodge (not Ram) truck restored to last me . One last note , there is no such thing as a good used compact/sub-compact car . People buy them and beat the crap out of them and don't maintain them . They're junk !

We took our 36,000 mile 2010 shortbed, regular cab, 4WD Ram in for some minor recall work and as we were in the waiting room a salesman came buy and asked if we were interested in selling - Cash (well, certified check) on the spot. We Didn’t even ask how much they were offering, just not interested in selling!

Ah the good ol' days. I have owned a few basic 3 on the tree pickups that the wife never drove even once.
We can't find a basic dependable work truck today. Power windows & locks, tilt, cruise, a/c "Cadillac like" creature comforts, along with ABS, air bags, etc., drive the price up when new.
All that unnecessary crap is still present and working when for sale on the used lot.
Back when men did buy a very basic workhorse of a truck, they also had their "Cadillac like" automobile with all those creature comforts for wife and family vehicle.
So many fully loaded and 4 door trucks are sold today because the new truck buyer is spoiled to those creature comforts and/or wants the truck to serve as both vehicles on the same 4 tires.
Like video killed the radio star,,, 4 door trucks killed the automobile.

Dont fall for the old " I have a buyer for your truck" line..or " We need used cars". It doesnt mean they are going to pay more than market. They are just trying to get you to buy another car. Some dealers send these mailers to every customer . I call it sucker fishing.

I have a 2004 Tacoma extra cab V6. It's got about 120,000 miles on it. Well cared for, paint still shines, nice wheels and tires. It's been an extremely reliable truck, never had any issues with it. But again, it's been well maintained. Still runs like a top. I paid 16 grand for it brand new in 2004.
I get offers to buy it almost every time I'm at the gas station. Last month, a guy driving a new Grand Cherokee offered me 12K for it. I couldn't believe he was serious, but he assured me he was.
I didn't sell. I tend to keep vehicles until I've worn them out. This one may outlast me.

"It might be" that 12k is low for that, rust free? AZ? Rust is not a big issue up here, but we DO get rigs 'out of town' and WA/ Spokane is using chemicals on the roads.............

Good point... the truck has been in AZ it's whole life. Absolutely zero rust anywhere.
Maybe I should advertise it for 16K and get my original money back. LOL!!
