More and more disgusted with local used pickup prices...and choice

-
Might be time to consider a classic.

I've seen a few NICE Little Red Express and Warlocks for 20K.

Guess I got lucky. I bought mine from a dealer that had just taken over another, and was trying to clean up their floor plan. 2018 Ram Big Horn, 4X4, Club Cab. Listed for $49,6XX, and I bought it for $36,000. Had about 10 miles on it when I test drove it. I looked around, and nobody could come close.

Here is a truck someone can make a deal on!
MSRP was $98,000
I will sell it for 56,000 to a FABO member..
2017 Thor Chateau with 2700 miles.
I will post it in for sale as well.

Good point... the truck has been in AZ it's whole life. Absolutely zero rust anywhere.
Maybe I should advertise it for 16K and get my original money back. LOL!!

But then you cannot replace it.
I ended up buying a new Tacoma about a month ago, they wanted for a used ones that were, 6 years old, 70,000 miles within $6,000 of what I could get a new one for.

I use 4 wd pickups as part of my job. I bought a new Avalanche in 2010 and beat the hell out of it for 6 years. At 165K it needed serious work. I wanted another Avalanche but they quit making them in 2013. The primo exit model is called a 2013 Black Diamond Edition so I started looking for a low mileage one. I found one with 38K miles on it at a Subaru dealer. I called them and told them I needed 9K for mine, what was the delta cash they needed for theirs. (it was a bit pricey but they don't make the rig anymore) We made a deal over the phone and I drove my 2009 over there and signed the papers and gave them their money. They never looked at my trade-in before I drove my new-to-me Black Diamond Edition off their lot but I bet they were bummed. I'm sure they just wholesaled the thing to get rid of it. The one I have now will be my last pickup as I am retiring (or trying to) and I promised my wife I would take care of this one.

Pickup prices around here dont seem outlandish, but its hard to find good working econoboxes for cheap though.I actually had people stop me in my 87 regular cab SWB 2wd dakota and ask if I wanted to sell it though...

I have been selling cars for 32 years and its a mystery to me ! I just took a 2017 4Runner TRD -Pro in trade with 36k for within 6k of what the MSRP was new.
And this guy cried like a baby about how we were ripping him off ! I told him that after are finished detailing and safety checking it we will be in it a little less than the new price.... Why would anyone pay that much for a 2 year old car with 36k when they could just go buy a new one ? He had no response...
Turns out I have a long term customer with a son in Seattle looking for this exact car ! I had it sold before it hit the lot ! I didnt mark it up much because her and her husband have been really close for a long time .

Point is that consumers drive the market . And as long as there are consumers that will pay stupid prices this will happen.
A used car is not always the best deal.... usually but not always.

I can't believe that people still fall for the old 'detailing and safety check we'll be in for a little less than a new one' line.

You happen to know Corky Luther down there?

my 97' ranger (w/ 240,000+ mi), every time someone asks me if i want to sell, my price is $20,000. it's going to cost me close to that, to find some thing that's as reliable, to replace it

I bought my 2008 GMC Sierra 2500HD with mid-level interior for $19500 from a dealer. I had to fly to Denver from San Jose to pick it up, cover the airfare, fuel and hotel for a night to get it home.
The California bluebook was $28500 for my area, and every truck with the same 78k low mileage was $3k to $4k more than bluebook.

I lifted the front end, did a Cat-Back, Cold Air Intake and paid for a dyno tune with transmission reprogramming. After paying the ridiculous California Used Tax and registration, it was still thousands less than what I could find here.

It smokes most folks out here, and will run over 120mph on the high way.

My 2000 5.9 Dakota R/T ext cab has found a home until one of us dies.

...and chances are, if it's truck, it will be resurrected!

It is the most dependable vehicle I have ever owned, or have ever known anyone else to have owned!

Seriously- if I were new truck shopping, I'd consider an already restored LRE.

I'd also consider swapping in a RH O/D trans (pretty sure it will fit without floor mods in a truck), and maybe EFI.

Then you have an appreciating asset!

(that has a cool factor that even the coolest new truck doesn't have)

A few years ago I sold a caged and tubbed Pro-Street Z-28 through Gateway Classic Cars. When I pulled onto their lot with the Camaro on the trailer behind my '98 SS/T they were more interested in consigning the SS/T than they were the Camaro...

Fact is Toyoto pick um ups really hold value, good trucks I must admit.

What drives up prices of decent used trucks is price of NEW ones, plus supply/demand. The new tucks are loaded with unneeded electrical crap! Try buying a basic work truck! They do not make them NOW!

Texas is a truck state. But in high propulated area like Houston there are tons of old ones. Trick is which went thru the great flood of'17!!

Right before I moved to Texas in '16 I bought a 8 D150 slant truck, 98 % rust free, and drove great. The hydraulic clutch cyl needed replaced! Cost $1000. I gave it to grandson about to start college. He did not want it, wanted a used rice burner, so I sold it for $700 to a car friend, and gave him the $ and wised him well!

I was watching re run of a BJ yesterday. I watched just a few sell. OK so I understand the "new" new is the modern drive trai, resto mod, but I saw a 58 chev 1/2 wonder resto mod, sell for $85,000,.... a real 67 OEM restored Camaro Z28 go for $65,000, and a REAL deal OEM restored 68 HEHI Roadrunner, ( real 426 car) go for $65,000!!!!!!! Then the next sevral were 50's pickups resto modded stuff sell for $70-90,000 !! Hahahahahahahahah

Another reason pickups even out of the 70's are good property!!???????

But the cars that sell at BJ will NEVER or hardly ever bring those bucks if the buyer wants to sell privately at HOME!!!!!

What on earth is driving these tremendous pickup prices. I've rethought and re-re-re-rethought what to do, and how to go, and broadened my search. From a 4 whanger extended cab Ranger/ Mazda/ Tacoma, to a 4wd, to a moredoor hemi 1/2T RAM the prices are just ridiculous. I just got emailing some guy. Wanted 3G above the highest I could "click" on Kelly. I selected all the high priced spread, and came nowhere near to what he wants. This is a 6G truck he wants over 85 or more closer to 9G
if you tried facebook marketplace and set your city to valdosta, brunswick, savannah, and other georgia, florida, alabama, arkansas and midwestern states you might find a better deal. just north of me was a 1990 d150 extended cab, 3 speed manual w/ overdrive that sold for $2150. There were several MINT 72-87 chevy single cab pickups for $2k or less where in most other parts of the country these same trucks sell starting at $6K.
I keep telling my liberal friends on facebook that there are TWO economies in the USA. (slamming them for their $15 min wage). The rural areas are SOOO much cheaper. November to early February are the cheapest times of the year to buy used vehicles.
Best Wishes.

Nice truck , Gary , hang on to it . You are ahead of the game . Here in New Hampshire that truck would be a rust bucket . I could wash my rig every day and the salt would stick to it after 2 miles . We are now into what is known as "mud season". The worst it has been in years . Funny because the snowfall has been low this winter . They're tapping trees for maple syrup like crazy right now but getting stuck up to the axels on gravel roads . Ya' wanna see rusty cars and trucks come to New England . Later, Tom

Maybe the Mexicans here in Texas should be buyng p cheap older rust free pickups and hauling them to the N.E. states to sell, rather than driving to auctions in Arkansas for wore out small cars to haul into Mexico to sell!!?????
People, as a whole, do not want to pay $1000 to have solid vehicle, old Mopar or pickup delivered to New England. If they did there would be a huge exit of vehicles leaving here, Tx.
Personally suits me just fine!!!!!

Supply and demand plus low fuel prices, sellers market

Barrett Jackson truck, $20,900.....WTH? 1983 B2000.........with 1928 miles on it. F it, my 82 is for sale.. Ill take half of this price! Mines got 100X the miles on it though....

We took our 36,000 mile 2010 shortbed, regular cab, 4WD Ram in for some minor recall work and as we were in the waiting room a salesman came buy and asked if we were interested in selling - Cash (well, certified check) on the spot. We Didn’t even ask how much they were offering, just not interested in selling!

This ahs happened to me about three times , standard cab shortbeds are getting rare, quite a few people are hunting them---------

there's your "two economies" at work-

those that can afford (or think they can afford) a new truck, and those of us that will probably never buy a new vehicle and be forced to face that rapid 25%plus depreciation in the first 2 years.

Enterprise Lease vehicles is a good place to find the best price on quality used vehicles
