Hello Everybody,
Silly question time. As per the pictures can someone please tell me what the box at the end of this steering column is called? Are there rubber seals or rebuild kits available for them? If you know of a thread where this has been discussed previously please point me in the right direction. This is for my 68 Plymouth Valiant which has a column shift. Thanks for your help. Regards, Ron

You can get new ones on ebay US you can get the kit with new rubber and roll pin $ 40-50 US than shipping and taxes on top of it . I think us muscle have these just don't take it as gospel. Some one will chime in.

If I'm not mistaken I believe it's called a steering coupler. It couples the gearbox to steering column.

Hang on, we have a member that is selling the kit, let me see if I can remember his name. I am thinking he sells thenm for 25 plus shipping .

Thanks for that. I got lucky and scored the genuine Mopar product on Rockauto for $15! They had 4 left at the time.

The Chrysler box coupling has a cap that is somewhat "bottle cap" crimped in place. I do as little distortion as possible to remove it ( like a bottle opener does ) so I can reuse it / put it back again. Yes the coupling rebuild kit includes a new cap but... its just a flat piece cut out. Recreating the crimp so it stays in place is nearly impossible. Many who have tried end up buying the additional formed wire retainer from aftermarket.... Rare Mopar 2996935 Steering Coupler Retaining Clamp - most Dodge Plymouth | eBay
The cross pin in the end of the steering shaft is a very tight press fit and must be centered. If the original isn't severely worn, leave it be. If you do need to replace it, find a press. Getting it centered with the BFH is another nearly impossible task.

Forgot to mention that I only found it by punching in the part number, which I wrote down but now I can't find it. Couldn't find it doing a usual search.

One more little tip... The box coupling has a tiny 'V' notch cut into its lower edge. It demarks where the master spline is located inside the bore. Coupling needs to go back together in same alignment, to master spline at steering wheel end. Otherwise the steering wheel will be upside down / 180 degrees wrong.

One other important note: These are different on manual steering and power steering units. One has a larger geared hole (clocking) and they are not interchangeable. Also the power steering has a shorter steering shaft if you are converting over.

I probably have the used steering column coupler depending on whether you have power or manual steering. (the are diferent)I sell them for $25 plus $8 US shipping. You may still need the kit with the new gasket and cover shown above. Good Luck!
