PINION won't budge

-
If it moved some, it should come out.
You popped seal and front bearing came out? It should.
It may have wedged.
The only thing i can think of.
The inner bearing cant really be stuck to anything.
Drive stub in from back side and see if you can get front bearing out.

I’ve had the pinion bearings wear into the pinion on GM axles before. The pinion drops into the groove and nothing gets it out. Was told by GM that vibration causes the wear.
Anyhow the heat seizes the pinion to the bearing. How about using a torch and cut it out? The roller bearing will come out with little effort if you heat the cage up and loosen things up a bit. Since your gutting anyhow.

Can't just simply heat the outer housing until it expands???? Treblig

So I'm understanding this correctly, did you say the front pinion bearing came out? Or not? If not it's possibility jammed onto the pinion keeping it from moving

Thats the only thing holding it in at this point. By driving pinion forward and researing bearing it may square up and come out.
As i mentioned, pop the seal.

Are you sure the pinion head isn't butted up against the housing preventing the gear from coming out? If it is a very high gear set like 2.41 or 2.57 the pinion head is really large and usually have to come out at an angle.

what could be the hangup...

That is a first for me,never heard of one being oval. Your luck is like mine, I could be on a one dog race at the track and the damn thing would die coming out of turn 4!

How is the housing inside after all the pounding. I don’t think I would want to use it now. But it may be fine. See if u can get some measurements. Kim

Question... could all the pounding and heat cause the cast iron center section to be out of shape at this point?

I would think when you go to assemble with the new gears and bearings, you will be able to tell if they set up good. I mean by the pinion turning smooth and the backlash being almost equal in 4 positions on the ring gear.

Yes, but they are pretty tough. Depends on how hot u got it. How does it look inside? I would be worried that the race/cup didn’t fit properly back into the housing. Kim

No pictures, didnt happen!
