Found a few things on the web about A500 having an oiling problem (early models I think, but not sure) And something about cross drilling a main shaft for increase oiling ?
Does anyone know what/if any oiling mods should/need to be done to an A500 while it's a part ?

ATRA Online

Mopar made upgrades over the years, and the early OD's had problems. In 93-94 they made major upgrades to oil supply and a bigger pump

Interesting. I know some of them don't fill the converter at idle in park. I have one that does and one that doesn't. Both 96's.

Biggest thing I remember on them was to get rid of that stupid check valve that was in the cooler line. They would stick in the close position and smoke the transmission because of lack of lube to the hard parts.

So can anything be done about that ? How do you check the fluid ?
There is a valve body mod that can be done I believe. Checking the fluid is like all Torqueflites, warm, idling on level ground in neutral. @lkopaska , got your ears on?

I read somewhere about cross drilling the sprag ( whatever that is ) in the very earliest A-500 / 42RH. I suppose when you go into one for rebuild you would see whether its cross drilled or not.

sounds like best bet is to get a 94-95-96 RH trans to start with. I'll just wait till one turns up.

later model will be RE instead of RH ( electronic rather than hydraulic ). RE can work, just a more complicated adaptation.

Governor pressure is what is controlled differently between the two. I don't know what is involved in installing one in an older car though. There should be many threads about it here on FABO. Cross member and tunnel mods would probably needed for most models.

I should study up on this. I have a 96 Dakota 2wd with 160,000 miles. sooner or later it will be taken off the road and the o/d tranny would be good to keep. I have read they can be built tough and you can get performance lock up converters as well. No reason why my 318 Swinger couldn't have a peppy lock up/overdrive and get 25 on the highway.

That's what I'm going to do with my 95 Dakota when it dies. Those transmission are getting tough to get and it's an easy swap over into an A body. But I will miss my Dakota, been a damn good truck.
