I'm in the market 4 a newer truck just looking 4 some reviews if there any good.Theres alotta these 6bangers out there. My current is a 04 ram 5.7 with 229k I like my v8 I'm torn witch ones better.

The biggest problem with the 3.6 Penstar is the crappy tune they come with. Our Journey with one is like driving Eeyore. The throttle delay is awful. I suggest you drive one. Its a dog in a 4400 lbs Journey, can't image it in a heavier truck.

The 3.6 is great in our Durango. It’s a 2017 Durango GT with the 8 speed trans. Drove it from Oklahoma City to Florida and back last summer. Had 6 grown adults in it plus some luggage. Wasn’t bad at all. I added a Mopar hitch to it but I’ve only been able to pull my seadoo so far.

The 5.7 is the right and smallest engine I would put in a truck. The V6 is a joke. Smog era engines are better.

nieghbor went out got himself a brand new one. nice looking truck, he went on and on about the eco 4 cyl, gas savings, blaaa blaaa......a few weeks after he bought it, he came home in used ford f250.
I didnt ask. he didnt say.
we both know though.

I have a 2014 stadard cab short bed ram express with the 3.6 in it , and love it . Great mileage and 300 h.p. , beats the 4.7 quadcab I ha d all to h--- !! Its liter than a quadcab, easier to park in closer places, and will tow my heavy car trailer w/ my 68 fastback w/o any problems. A sort p/u is easier to back and manuever than a longer truck too. That being said , I only live about 8-9 miles from the dragstrip , I wouldn`t want to pull uphill much tho.

I’ve owned more trucks than I care to admit.
As a business owner- fuel economy and resale are our only hope for any value on trucks besides starting and driving every day to do “their job.” Trucks are like employees- they need to show up and do their job every working day or I dont make money.

Okay with that said- you never go wrong going one size up for longevity and dependability. I won’t buy a V-6 especially here in New England. A lot of long hills and even though the v-6 is not a bad engine... the transmission is the part always shifting up and down to make the truck do its job.
Transmissions to me are weak links. Not the engines. Both cost a lot to replace but transmissions in trucks seem to be the weaker link. Buying a larger engine typically can allow you a better transmission. Bigger coolers, bigger brakes, you get the point.

As a “Johnny home owner” you may not care about pulling big loads or working hard day in and day out. But if resale or repairs are a worry, then a V-6 pick up truck is not the best. It’s like trying to resell a 2wd truck in snow season. Good luck and test drive what you are talking about. There is not a huge difference with the 5.7hemi and the 6.4 hemi. I’ve got both in my fleet. The 5.7’s have made me a lot of money. Both love gasoline.
Good luck!

how much price difference between the 6 cyl and 5.7? whats the MPG difference between the two? i'd have a hard time buying a v6 full size truck.

Look at it this way. You have had a Dodge with the 5.7 and liked the power and just the way it drives. Now if you go to a 3.6 the power will no longer be there. I am not saying that the 3.6 won't push the truck, if it wouldn't then Ram would never have built it. It would be like going from a 340 Dart to a /6 Dart and trying to enjoy the performance that you had once before, how long would it be before you go back to that 340. Think about it.

I LOVE the 3.6.

Fully loaded and I mean FULLY loaded T&C going up NC switchbacks and 13% Saluda grade- no problem, and averaged 27 MPG!

You know there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 3.6 liter motor, my daughter has one in her Town&Country and my son has one in his Jeep Wrangler, my son in law has one in his Avenger and my daughter in law has one in her Jeep Grand Cherokee and they all run great. It's just not the right motor for a full size pickup truck especially if it is a 4X4 pickup truck. Do yourself a favor and get the 5.7 you won't look back.

No v 6 in fullsize pickup I agree. Go with a small block, or do it right and get a 3/4 t. Or be a bigboy and hget an old 12 valve cummins.

Does Dodge make an "eco 4 cylinder" or are you talking about the FORD Eco-Boost series in a thread about DODGE and RAM trucks?

5.7 in my 17 crew cab, but I was looking for the V6, hard to find in a demo, and a demo was my price range.
Weren't there TONS of 6 cyl in 1/2 tons in the past?
300 HP V6 would have been more than enough for me.
As mentioned above, drive both.

the 3.6 is arguably better than the 318, 360, 5.2 and 5.9 in a truck

because of the HP at TQ ratings

arguably

Just depends on what you plan on doing with it. The V6 is rated 305 HP-269 LB/FT. The 5.7 is 395 HP/410 LB-FT. MPG is rated at 16/23 for the V6 and 15/21 for the 5.7. (FWD) The way I drive, probably 90% of the time, the V6 would do fine for me, but with the Hemi, the power is there for the other 10%. Not enough difference in MPG for me to step down. I went for the Hemi.

MPG is rated at 16/23 for the V6 and 15/21

thats all i need to know right there to tell me that the 6 isn't worth it. in the real world i'll bet that the 5.7 is a lot closer and maybe better then the six too... that 6cyl would have to get 20/30 mpg to make me even consider the damn thing over the 5.7

Does not the power ratings of the v6 depend on the turbo being kicked in?

Back in the 70's before the diesel pickup, people that pulled big goosenecks, like me, we used 454 chevies, a few would lateryeras get sucked into buying a 350 because the factory said " suchever", Yes it pulled but the life PULLING a load is limited Guess it depends on your usage of the v6!!

Not entirely so , I drove the 5.7 hemi trucks, new and used, and wasn't really impressed w/ them, in fact I have been disappointed w/ the 5.7 ever since they came out. Guess after owning two 426`s and racing one (superstock type) for 14 yrs ,t hey don't got it !!
I`D ALMOST PIUT MY SHORTBED STANDARD CAB UP AGAINST ONE IN THE FIRST THREE GEARS-both being bone stock.

People drove full size trucks with 150 net HP 318's for decades.

The 3.6 is fine in the Mini Van. My wife had a T&C. The problem with it behind the Ram is it lacks a lot of torque that the 5.7 Hemi has. And the MPG in the ram isn't really much difference between the two. Hemi is the better choice IMO.
