'65 Formula S always have 10" inch drums on front or some had 9"?

-
They were supposed to have 10" but there have been cars that had 9" drums. We were talking about a few weeks ago. I wish I could find the thread.

All 8 cylinder A body cars from 64 on until they went to front disc and big center hole in the 70's had 10 inch drums .Only 6 cylinder cars had 9's This doesn't mean you won't find 8 cylinder cars with 9's. People tend to use what ever they can when they need to get on the road and these cars all have history

In 1965 you could order a brand new Dart 270 4 door sedan with a 273 and automatic transmission. Came with 9 inch brakes. My buddy Johan owns it. Second owner.

I have a 65 Dart GT that came with same drive line. 9 inch brakes all around. Both these cars was assembled in October of 1964.

Never saw a V8 car with 9 in brakes Maybe in 64 when they first introduced the small block 273 they did some but I really doubt it.

Wrong. I have an early 65 Barracuda that came with 9 inch brakes, 273 4bbl and a 4 speed with sway bar. I also have the build sheet for the car that shows 9 inch brakes.

I'm looking in the master parts catalog (genuine MOPAR not a reprint) for 1965 and everything in there for 9 inch brakes indicated 6 cyl. Go figure . I don't doubt what you are saying but it has to be real rare . The V8 cars have heavier torsion bars , a heavier center link ,heavier leaf springs , you know they built them different than the 6 cylinder cars why would they stick in 9 inch brakes? it makes no sense .

My first 65 had 9's and a V8 per the VIN. I bought it with a 340 in it already and those 9's were downright scary. "S" had to have 10's as that was called out in the "S" package. The 273/4 did not make it an "S" either.

I had 65 273/235 4bbl car that had everything but the in dash tach and the S badges from the factory and it had 10's,heavy springs,2 1/4 in exhaust the cut out in the rear valance for the resonator sway bar and a 4 speed This was in the mid 1980's

As a rule of thumb. All 64’s came with 9” drums. All 65 slant 6 cars were outfitted with 9” drums and the 273 cars 10” drums.
Of course like most mopar line assembly back in the day sure their were many exceptions to this.

I had a 65 Barracuda 273 that was built October 22, 1964 that came with 9" brakes.

Original 64 -273 , 4-speed Barracuda here . Had 9" brakes all the way around . Now 10¨ on all 4 corners with 8-3/4¨ rear.

To be fair to 9 inch brakes the reason they don't stop any good now for us driving with them 50 years after the fact is the fact that they took the asbestos out of the lining material. Back when these cars were new I used to slam on the brakes and the wheels would lock up,the tires would screetch and stop. Today that's just not the case even with 10's

I have had 2 273 V8 65 Barracudas (both 2 barrel), an earlier build car that had 9" front drums and a later build (Feb65 ) car that also had a 273 but with a 4 sp and it had 10" drums on the front.. go figure.

My 65 Barracuda 273/235 4 bbl car had 9" drums from the factory. I bought a pair of 10" drum spindles, and will be installing Wilwood disc's on it!
