71 Duster 360 (new project)

-
Driver side headers fell into place this afternoon.....starter in....shifter linkage hooked up...few small things and we are ready to go...

Call the Doctor this morning and ordered a set of axles for that Dana 60...Going with Dutchman chromemoly axles ....they ship in two days...vs Strange's week or two...

This one is staying home this weekend....trans problems continue

I have the 8 3/4 rear still in the car....the new axles should be here next week...

I am transmission problems.....seems I forgot how to put a 904 together in the last few weeks.....lol

Took a second look at the transmission today....actually had my daughter sit in the car and go thru the gears.....there lies the problem....the shifter will not move....the cable got melted.,,,,Yesterday...i moved the shifter but the cable was not working...so it never came out of neutral that is why it acts like their is no 1st...2nd or 3rd....

These headers 1 7/8 TTi occupy different area then the old hooker 5204 and i have a 5 ft cable which loops outward....ordered a 4 ft cable...anyway the old cable was wrapped in hose plus ....

Ordered new cable will be here Tuesday.

ok...new cable on car...but can not get swivel to drop in shifter bracket no matter what i do.....

got new bracket that bolts on trans...and shifter arm.....

as i remember...i could not get a 4 ft cable to line up ....so i used a 5 ft cable and why did the 5th cable work and not the 4 ft....beats the ***** out of me.....will work on it tomorrow after work...

regarding the 1 7/8" TTI´s, can you please make some photos around the steering column? afaik they say these won´t fit with auto trans / column shift, i´d like to see. I know you do not have column shift, but to get an idea.....you know what i mean?

Michael

Was the cable in regular hose? ....or firesleave? I had cable issues on the Mirada and used Areo-sleeve on it and never had a prob again.

got the trans out of the car again.....one trans has a missing snap ring on the front annuls...and plantery ....second one seems that the teflon pump sealing rings are not work and it just blows air....

then the old transbrake from 1993 was in the pan ...i hit the pan and it falls and break off the rooster combs off....was a wonderful day....I am sure it can be fixed if it is shipped back to tranzact..

well...had a WTF moment today....called a friend...yes i have a few....we discussed the 904 problem...no forward gears....told him the trans rotates really easy both ways...so we figured maybe the over running clutch had took a crap...so I was going to swap out transbrake to other 904 that i just replaced the front planetaries on...no snap ring..lol

anyway...I just had to know.....so I torn into the trans to see if it was the sprag....getting down to the rear drum...it only turns one way...removed the drum looked at sprag...everything looks good...put drum back in...it only turns one way as it is suppose to ...so nothing to see there...my hopes and dreams of finally finding out what is wrong is dashed....so I slowly start to assemble trans piece by piece...everything looks ok...get to front planetaries...slides in...but does not engage anything....WTF....pull it out...I installed the wrong front planetaires....I had swapped out from 2.74 gear back to 2.45 gear...but searching for a set of planetaires in the dark using your cell phone screen for light is not a good thing.....I had picked up another planetairy that was the same as the one I took out.....Bingo we have a winner...3 weeks later.....

Hard to fill that gap! We seem to be our own worst enemy at times....

Went home from work due to heavy rain all day in Vegas....spend most of the day working on 74 Duster....finally took a few minutes and dropped engine/trans into Duster....still hanging on chain as the floor was wet and did not want to climb under it.....should be all dried up tomorrow....and will work late as needed to get it to the track Saturday

Fuster decided to start leaking oil last night. Trans works fine though

Now that I survived the Great Blizzard of 2019 in Vegas....working on dropping the pan to change out pan seals and rear main...

The QA1 K member looks like it will be a pretty simple job....just to to get the headers moved out of the way

Got the headers off to the side....dropped the drag link and the oil pan fell out of the car....cleaned everything twice...put a new rear main seal and new pan gasket with end seals....letting it set over night.....plus I need to go thru that carb....i can smell ethanol in the oil...

I am glad to say that the pan has new seals....and that was not was leaking....sometimes the simple things in life get overlooked....as I started the car up and it was leaking still.....copper fitting on the oil pressure line was finger tight on the back of the engine.....now it is tight...

carb has new gaskets in it....going to keep smelling the oil...

Duster will see the track this weekend.....new 408 in it....still running the 8 3/4 this weekend with 4.56 gears...
Transbrake was tested this afternoon while putting it in trailer......Dana 60 will go in after this weekend...

Dana 60 will go in after this weekend...
Probaly sooner than you think...

8 3/4 should survive the weekend...has brand new ring and pinion plus it is a Moser fab 875

Tonya went for ride on the first pass freeze plug case out. Car side way into other lane. Didn't hit anything. Fixed
