..........And here I WASN'T gonna buy a diesel. Ran a few errands today, and short hop on the freeway. The torque is intense. Damn engine doesn't sound like "its doin anything", but the speedo just goes up

Heater controls were unconnected from the vacuum pump but the temp blend door seems to be broken, the cruise control DOES work!!!

Only real downside..........and I'll check tomorrow as the old White Whale is on the hoist.......I think someone swapped in a smaller rear axle, maybe a 60, and it's either not limited slip or the thing clutches are completely gone, because "it acts" like an "open" rear axle I'll check the ratios, a swap may be in the works LOL

You will have a hard time trying to make that truck brake a sweat. You will love that truck.
 
The only upgrade the truck can really use is the 3rd gen front disc rotors and caliper hangers. But then u need to run 17 inch rims and tires. If u have discs on the rear ur golden, but I believe urs has drum brakes which u can swap in Chevy size wheel cylinders to help the rear brakes out. There is a blend door fix that is metal, not the cheap plastic. I’ll see if I can find what it is and where it’s from. A great site for our trucks is TDR, I believe it’s Turbo Diesel Resources. Kim
 
I would agree in most cases but costs. I bet most diesel owners spend more in a year on maintainence on their diesels (at least all my buddies do) than I have spent in 22 years of ownership of my old trusty V10 Ram. Still is 95+% all original, even still the original spark plugs. All 10 of them. I am sure the next truck will be a diesel. But it just won't die. Hate to see what I have spent on fuel though? Lol.

I would agree in most cases but costs. I bet most diesel owners spend more in a year on maintainence on their diesels (at least all my buddies do) than I have spent in 22 years of ownership of my old trusty V10 Ram. Still is 95+% all original, even still the original spark plugs. All 10 of them. I am sure the next truck will be a diesel. But it just won't die. Hate to see what I have spent on fuel though? Lol.

Waite till u crack a head from not changing spark plugs. Also when u try to change spark plugs 1 on each side will likely break off. Then the fun begins. I hate it when people don’t do regular mantainace then screw something up then bring it to me to fix. Kim

I fix all my own stuff, so don't worry. I will manage just fine when the time comes. I always do.
 
Thanks Kim. I upgraded the rear cylinders on the old pickup and it did help. I THINK I put larger calipers on it too I cannot remember It has the stock rotors and it REALLY stops. Vacuum assist, and o' course the "new" truck is hydroboost
 
How often do you change the 12 qts of $5 oil in that... 7500 miles?
 
That truck should have a Dana 80 in it, most likely 3.55 and might not have a limited slip in it. The Dana 80, 70 and 60 all have same basic shape when looking at the cover but the D-80 will measure 13 1/2" top to bottom vs the D-70 at 12 5/8" and the D-60 at 12".
Those diesel trucks don't want to move unless both wheels are putting power to the ground, my '90 Cummins came with an open diff and it sucked trying to take off in the rain and forget about snow. If you do discover and open diff and want to upgrade, put a limited slip in it instead of locker, I have a locker in my truck and I'm not happy with the racket it makes at slow speed "no load" turns like in parking lots.
Oh and congratulations on the "new" truck, once you get used to the diesel you won't want to mess around with a gas truck ever again.

i almost bought a 95 ram with a V10 as a plow truck...but the wife wants something newer

Uh........................DOH!!!..............Turns out I was dreamin or some'thin

I measured between two bolts on the cover of the old one, then crawled under the new one. it was immediately evident that the diesel is larger. I don't know WTF I was "on" when I looked at that. Not sure, I think the gas one is a 70 and the diesel is an 80. But it is NOT limited slip, or else the clutches are VERY broke. There is NO resistance rotating one tire, the other goes opposite.

If I keep this, and who knows at my age, I will likely have a limited slip installed. Nope, don't want a locker. Friend of mine had a Detroit locker years ago in his Chev 3/4 and it was noisy and poppy and ALWAYS sounded like it would break something
 
I had a 99 ram 2500 cummins. Only had 115,000 miles on it and the water jacket cracked. Turn out some of them came with a block casted in Brazil. They have a big 53 casted into the bottom of the block. Happened right after spending $1500 on a new injector pump. Needless to say I went back to gas.

I had heard of these and didn't even check when I bought the "new" one. I checked the other day, and it's NOT!!! LOL
 
Diesels are made for using and going miles, yes they cost more to buy, new or used, and upkeep is more, BUT they are made to pull and use. Hauling the kiddies, golf cart trailers, and groceries, then gas is it!
I can remember hauling the 16 ft stock trailer with father in law back in 1969. He had a 64 chevy 1/2 ton, six, and we hauled 3 broodmares up the road 5 hours in it!!

my 98 on the left gas and my best friend's 2001 on the right diesel. He's got the custom hood the 2in lift on the front and the matching canopy. Unfortunately this was the last time that I seen him driving it. The fuel injectors went or fuel pump or whatever and now he drives a $400 minivan LOL I just had my radiator spring a leak and got a used one for 60 bucks at the wrecking yard, 20 minutes to take it back out and 20 minutes to put it back in..
