It doesn't necessarily have to come out of a Dakota. I got mine out of a Dodge Ram. It was 22 bucks at the U-Pull-It and is by far the best starter I had to date. I gave them that junk mini starter that I got from the parts store that always gave me trouble in exchange...
I just doused that greasy thing in WD40 til it came clean...

O'RILEY 77 BUCKS LIFETIME WARRANTY.Took the extextion off it was hitting my oil line!

Got mine from napa years ago for dodge truck, lifetime warranty. Have replaced it several times over the years. 528 cu in 14.0 compression turns over no problem.

Is this a direct bolt on for a big block? No mods to make it work?

DIrect bolt on for Slant, Small Block or Big Block.

so is this starter actually a lot smaller than the original starters on our old cars?

WOW!! what a difference! Thanks for the heads up on this! I had no idea..

I have one myself. I actually got it for the Chrysler 331 Hemi I built for the rat truck but I am going to swap it onto the 170 n the Valiant I think.

To give you "some idea" how much power a permanent magnet field makes over older "wirewound field" starters, the one on the 01 Cummins I just bought is not much larger than the Dakota starter. As an old man who sold parts in a previous life, "I'm amazed."

wow, the Cummins starter is 2.5 KW vs. 1.4 KW of the Dakota starter.

I did the same as jpar. Got it at the pic and pull off a mid 90's Ram for $21 plus a core fee of $6. To use the factory plug I spliced it with the lead from the solenoid. Been using it for 5 years.

so the factory wiring on my dart wont bolt up to that starter without mods?

There was a guy selling an adaptor to move ur wires from the top to our front for easier access, it I don’t remember who. Kim

well, I tried sending him a message but his inbox is full.. I would SURE like to buy one from him if anyone hears from him..
Sorry for the delay but I'm just reading this. I remember reading about that conversion a while back and did some research/shopping and ordered a few of the needed parts for my mini starter. When I get home (at work) I'll rummage around in the shop and try to post a couple part numbers/vendor...…that is, if you haven't found them already.
