Ever remove something just to get to something else, then when you put it back together the thing you just removed and put back now doesn't work?

Removed my starter, then headers, so I could swap out my steering box for a new borgeson unit. Get it all back together and go to fire it up so I can test out the new box, and the engine wont crank. Checked the battery - 12.3 volts, checked my main lead to the starter, it has power at the starter, put a test light on the trigger wire at the starter - it lights up when I turn the key to the crank position. This tells me that somehow the starter is screwed up when all I did was remove it and put it back.

#walk away for now

Can you hear anything when you jump it? Bound up against converter? And yes best to walk away for a while.

Sh** happens! Time for a new one.

It just does nothing. No sound or buzz or anything.
If I get a chance in the morning I’ll pull it off, possible it’s bound up.
But if I remember right, when I was disconnecting the wires to pull it off I had a little trouble with the small wire. Seemed like the stud was turning in the starter as I was trying to get the nut off. Wondering if I broke off a wire inside under that stud.

It is a mini starter like the one toolmanmike posted.

Hit the shift linkage by accident?

From your description the solenoid is getting juice but not activating, not throwing out the drive and engaging the rest of the starter. You need a new solenoid.

Neutral safety switch? The one side of the relay coil is grounded through the neutral safety switch. You will still light up the test light when turning the key but the relay won't pull in.

Hmmmm, you might be onto something there. Before the steering box swap became a “right now” thing, I was in the process of pulling my 904 trans out.
So I did have the the shift cable, kick down cable, and the wire to the switch on the trans disconnected. Hooked all that back up this morning. I’ll have to check all that stuff, like make sure I had the shift lever actually in Park when I hooked the cable back up, etc

Check out the image below. The #2 terminal is grounded by the neutral safety switch. Try grounding that terminal, if it starts look at your neutral safety switch/neutral safety switch wiring.

You more than likely just answered ur own question ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Bob nailed it.

Bingo

Took the starter back off, removed the plate on the end of the solenoid section.
The wire to the small stud was broken off, and strangely enough it already had some solder on it. (thought is was a new starter when I bought it).
So first pic is the connection to the large stud (and what the other connection should look like).
Second pic is what I found when I got in there.
Third pic is fixed.
I was able to stick my soldering iron in there and add a little fresh solder to both ends, then I rotated the stud back to where it belongs and just soldered it back together.

Good news is, its back in the car and works fine ! And the new steering box is amazing. Went for a short ride, but I think with the new box and new pitman arm I need to adjust my toe-in again.
Sorry for the blurry pics.

Great news, congrats, now enjoy!

While you are in there you should replace the contacts. They look just about waisted in the picture. They're cheap and since you are in there.
