i got a sb in storage on a stand. Loosened rocker arms, drained the oil and put oil (may have been Marvel Mystery oil) in the cylinders. Would you spin it periodically? Or would that wipe the oil film off the cylinders and bearings?

Not with the rockers back off, no.

Why would you drain the oil ? If its in storage fill it up with oil don't drain it out.

Oil was old, and I knew i would need new in when it comes out of storage so thought it would be best to get the used oil out. Just sits in the bottom of the pan anyway, doesn’t it?

Exactly. No need to have oil in it really.

I bought a motor from a guy I drove 50 miles one way and when I got there he said it was behind his barn. I freaked out and there was probably 20 motors in the dirt covered with a tarp, he said they are all good I filled them up with oil, used drain oil. He had a lot of equipment and every time he drained the oil out of them he put it in the engines he had. It was filled to the top of the valve cover and he wanted the oil so he popped it out of the ground with the back hoe and drained the oil, pulled the valve cover and it looked good no rust except for the bottom of the pan. I changed the pan checked it out and all was good.

Just for my knowledge, what is the reason? My thought was turn it 1 1/2 revolution just to change positions of the rings on cylinder walls, bearing surfaces, etc. It may sit for a long time, backup motor for when I blow up my 408.

Thx

I've got 67 273 commando engine here. It will need rebuild. Dedicated 1/2" pull bar and a socket stays on it so I can stop there and turn it from time to time. WD40 from a gallon can in a pump spray bottle stays there too. A few squirts in each spark plug hole from time to time. I might turn twice in 2 weeks or might be 3 months since turned. Varies with how much time I spend near it ( I might turn it today ).

For long term storage you can use that spray fogger made for marine engines. It coats everything inside the cylinder

When you going to come pick up these 302 swirl port heads?

I would turn it.... it is amazing how a little rust can 'weld' rings to a cylinder wall.....

I was told a long time ago, only build the short block unless you are installing the engine within the month. Otherwise, changes in temperature may allow condensation. Assuming this is an already ran motor, with used oil. I always squirt oil down the cylinders when it’s going to sit for the season. I NEVER use WD-40, while it may Displace Water, hence WD, it isn’t oil. Anything I touch, with human oil, that sits that may flash rust, I use Howe’s penetraing oil, assy lube, or SAE 30 mixed with a lil mineral spirits to thin it out in spray bottle. On my short blocks, covered in garbage bags, I oil each cyl and turn the motor. Weekly or Bi. All that **** burns out when you run it anyway. Better safe than sorry. Especially when our parts are 2/3 more money than comparable GM crap.
RRR, why wouldn’t you spin by hand with shafts off and plugs out?
