Has anyone tried installing a big block with Schumacher Tr-Y's mounted in a '68 Dart? Schumacher web site says the headers can be installed after engine is in the vehicle OR mounted to the engine and dropped in as a unit. Just curious.

No help here, but if I get my car high enough in the front, I can get my 2" TTI`s off my 505 68 fastback , w/o pulling the starter or anything else. Except the exhaust ------------

Changing the starter on my tall deck '68 Dart with 2" TTI's is an all day job. I just finished building a low deck 470 and thinking about using the Schumacher Tri-Y's. Should be considerably easier to work on.

They drop in easy when you remove the steering column, this a 74 duster with a 413.

I was thinking about bolting them up while the engine is still on the run stand and then dropping it in the car. Schumacher made it sound like that is possible. Just hate to dangle an engine over a freshly painted car yanking parts off.

Hey , are those the summit racing valve covers ? I likem ----how tall are they compaired to a mopar performance big block cover ??

Wasn't Summit. I'll have to go through my reciets. I remember being a little hesitant ordering from someone I'd never heard of.
Turned out pretty decent. I believe they are 3¾" tall. They cleared the Harland Sharp rockers even without the extra thick cork gaskets.

Nice looking motor! Tri Y Headers should fit fine, dropping them in already bolted on. Pretty sure you will need to remove your heater fan motor first. The Valve cover will hit the stock one. I had to on my 70 Dart, 440.

My firewall is smoothed, so fan motor won't be an issue. How about steering column? I just haven't run across too many engines that can be installed with the headers. Not a big deal either way.

You can install the engine from below with headers on but I really doubt you'll be able to drop it in from above with the headers on. I can't see how that would work at all unless the steering column, torsion bars and steering box were removed. You might also need to remove the master cylinder and the heater blower motor.

Pulling the K frame with the full suspension on it isn't too hard once you build a fixture to hold it. Then you can roll the engine and trans in from below with the headers installed. When you do it this way you also have the starter bolted on as well as the alternator and fan belts. Basically a running engine can be installed from below since that is the way the factory designed it to go in. You do have to build some fixtures for this way to work, but once you get it all figured out it sure works nice.

Al's Rapid Transit offers the same valve cover. I don't think that's where I bought mine from. Cause I paid around $104. They're asking $142!!!!!
Only problem was they were bowed in the middle about 0.030" . I used 80 grit sticky back sand paper on a piece of Silstone counter top and worked them back and forth till they were perfectly flat.

Drivers side with Schumacher headers I installed the header by lifting motor and installing from underside of the car with the manual steering in. Passenger side I was able to install from the top side without moving the motor.

Andy said once that he had some machined a little diff. to help stop the gasket leaks. With my raised port heads my headers are higher and closer to the valve covers, I haven't found a solution yet .they need replacing right now------

Well, I decided on the Schumacher headers. The install was simple as can be. I hated to choke the 470 down but I dought it'll see a lot of track time. Changing the car to more of a cruiser anyway.

NICE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Amazes me how much room other people have w/ big blocks , I cant even slide my figure between my heads and the firewall because of my raised port heads . Even makes getting the back valve cover bolts off a little pain.

Strange as it may sound, the hardest part of the install was one of the bellhousing bolts!
I normally install engines/trans/k-frame from underneath while on "install stand". When I removed the talk deck I left the transmission in place. Figured it'd save a little time when I got around to installing the 470. Couldn't lower the back of trans low enough to start that one bolt.

Looks nice. The Schumacher headers will work pretty good if you go to the track.

I read an article on the test between those and a set of full length headers on a 440, the full length headers were worth 3/!0) of a second in the 1/4 mile . I that doesn`t bother a guy, the less hassel would be worth it , maybe !

I think Schumacher rated the headers between 450hp-500hp. Other than a slightly smaller cam, this 470 is a mirror to the last one I built that dyno at 583hp. I'm guessing this one is around 525hp. So the Tri-Y's shouldn't hurt it too bad. And diffinaly easier to install than the 2" TTI's.

I thought O'Reilly's was a parts store? Had to order top radiator hose and a radiator cap!!!!!!!
Really? This sucks for a town 105000+ population and have to order a radiator cap.
So much for a Friday night test run.

I have had to have oreillies order everything I have bought for my 440/505 from them, they stock nothing, not even pan gaskets.
How many 383,400,440, and hemi engines are there combined ? "billions?" All take the same pan gasket !!

They stopped making them 41 years ago, there are probably a few hundred being driven regularly on the road. A few thousand on weekends, if that.

Radiator cap is generic so you should be able to find that anywhere. All domestic cars used the same style cap for many years and Chrysler still uses a cap that fits. I think I have a cap from a new Dodge Ram on my Duster.

The upper hose can be hard to come by depending on which one you need. If you know the Gates number you can usually find them on-line with next day shipping.

They stopped making gen 1-2 sbc years ago too, but u can still walk in a nd buy a lot of parts for them.
