so, short story, last night, bad crash right in front of our house, welll just feet down the street. We witnessed the whole thing. High speeding crotch rocket hit a Jeep head on, killing that driver and the motorcycle rider was lifelined no word there. VERY high rate of speed from what we witnessed. Anyway, cops stopped by a little bit ago to interview us, they’re trying to rule out mechanical issues such as a stuck throttle(it wasn’t, guy was just being stupid). But now because of that, my wife is freaking and insisting on an emergency kill switch to be mounted on my steering wheel of my Dart since it’s being built as a pro-touring car and gonna have north of 550 hp.

So with all that in mind, I’m thinking of a momentary OFF push button switch, one that when I push it, it interrupts the power from the ignition. Question is, where to make that connection? I’m thinking tapping into the ground on the coil wire. Thoughts?

Make the switch open the circuit and not short it...

When the switch is closed, it completes the circuit...

When the switch is open, it interrupts the circuit....

So a push button where In is actually off and out is on?

Dang that is awful. How did the driver of the car get killed?? Usually motorcycle wrecks are pretty one sided

Jeep driver was ejected. Looked like the hit happened on the passenger side and then the Jeep left the road went nose first into a wide, ditch

Not sure a "button on the wheel" is what I'd go for. Let's say you crash, etc and are still moving, and the wheel is making like "round and round" due to the ensuing action I would want a great big switch somewhere you can reach easy, say near the shifter, away from damage that might occur

So far as 'what to break" depends if you are EFI or carb, it would be handy to kill the fuel pump along with ignition. Also if you have a trunk mount battery (or even if you don't) you can buy bulk lengths of bike/ motorcycle/ morse cable and rig a "pull" release for a battery switch. Bear in mind killing the battery ONLY will not kill the engine if the alternator is still connected.

Omg that is horrible. Motorcycle riders really piss me off! Not all of them but the road racer ones. We have a bunch of them around here that will absolutely fly down little mountain back roads going 135 mph in a 25 zone then blame the old man mowing his grass for wiping out. I saw this one guy rear end a car in Walmart parking lot doing a wheelie then literally got on Facebook and blamed the driver of the car for not signaling at the stop sign!

Yeah I call it Darwinism, it just sucks that the innocent had to die. All I know is, I can’t wait to move from this road. Were a ways out into the hills but it’s a relatively straight road with rolling hills, we get people flat flying all the time. I told the deputy that if they really want to know what happened to come watch from my driver way a few days, they’d fill a ticket book in no time

Fast EFI is the plan

Bass boats have a dead mans switch on a cord with a plug thing ( technical term) that kills the ignition if you pull on the cord ( like when you fall out of the boat). They cost about 20$. Could mount it on the dash with the cord hanging.

Mine is on the switch panel. It's a rocker switch with the red flip down cover. When I flip it down it kills the MSD Box.

WFT? Well that's not it..?

You could look in a wrecking yard for an inerita fuel pump switch, sometimes mounted in the trunk, to interupt systems if there is a bad enough hit.

Question... why would accident on street tiger the need to have a shutoff switch? Ignition switch will kill most things unless wires get pinched in which case even a shutoff switch might not function.

She’s worried about my throttle hanging now when I go to take the dart to Auto cross etc.

If you mount a switch somewhere obvious it doesn’t really have to be hooked up......

If you auto cross- use the horn button as your disconnect. Install a relay - 85 is power 86 is wire from negative horn button (delete factory horn relay) 87a and 56 are your circuit to coil and fuel pump. Need to kill car- hit the horn. OR get a Latching relay. You hit the horn and it opens the contacts for the power until you hit the button again. No extra switches and looks factory.

LOVE this idea. Thank you very much.
