I had this posted in the wrong part of the forum.

have a 71 duster here in Arlington Texas. I swapped in a 8 3/4 rear with sure grip. I have a 340 installed date coded 1969. So after we got it all back together there is oil leaking from the flex plate cover. So I would like to pull the motor and trans all at once. I remove just the bellhousing bolts before and I don’t want to do that again. So what all do I need to disconnect. So far:

No driveshaft
Trans mount down
Headers disconnected
Neutral safety switch and speedo disconnected.
Pistol grip taken off.
Starter out
Zbar- disconnected
Which bolts and linkage rods need to be disconnected?

Thanks for all your help.
Brian

It sounds like you only have the 4 tranny bolts holding it in. You have the engine supported with a jack, and as you pull tranny out lower engine jack. It sounds like either a rear engine seal leak or front trans seal, but more than likely rear main seal leak. By the way you don't have to remove bellhousing to remove tranny. Also if you put jack under oil pan put a piece of plywood to protect it. Linkage rods are attached to trans so will come out with the transmission, no need to disconnect.

I’m looking to remove the engine and trans as a whole. There is a cross meme bet in the way.

Sorry I thought just tranny. To remove engine you have to disconnect all the wiring, hoses radiator and draining anti freeze, exhaust system from manifold and then motor mounts. Engine ad tranny should come out together as long as hood is off and maybe remove radiator so you don't damage it when removing engine & trans. You say trans mount down but is that tranny cross member down, because the trans drops as the engine lifts.

As long as the shifter arm in the car is out you should be good to go. I dread doing an engine removal because it seems like you over look one thing. Just be slow with the hoist and keep checking that everything is clearing and disconnected.

Ok so no 4 speed shifter linkage needs to be removed.
sounds like there is some communication problems here.... both the upper shift rods (1/2)and(3/4) should come off pretty easily to drop the 4-speed. Reverse rod as well if its being pulled with the motor. Nuts holding the shift leavers off the trans and clips to pull the swivels of the shifter... I'm not seeing the clips on the shifter swivels tho ... might be easier to pull the shifter off the mounting pad and all three levers from the trans. good luck

I used this to tilt engine tranny to get out easily. I ordered from Home Depot believe it or not for $27 on line. Made life easier.

Put the rear of the car as high as you can get it, it will make removal easier.
If you remove the bottom pulley and water pump it will give you some more room.

I just pulled my 68 340 4 spd dart engine tranny. I jacked up car, Removed driveshaft, shifter linkage, speedo cable, unplugged back-up light switch and unclip wires from side of tranny .Removed bracket that holds Z bar to bell housing. Then supported tailshaft and removed tranny crossmember. I then lowered tranny enough to access and remove remove the shifter unless you can just remove your shifter handle. I then used a rachet strap on each torsion bar to help support the tranny with crossmember out. You can loosen and remove it when you start to pull out . Tranny should now be ready. Then unbolt your exhaust pipes from manifolds. Remove two motor mount nuts. Hopefully I didn't miss anythingelse under the car. Now lower the car ,drain coolant, remove radiator or it wont come out with engine tranny pull.Remove your cap and rotor or you may crack it on firewall. Remove heater hoses and wire harness. I removed my Alt,Power Steering pump and Exhaust manifolds to make things easier but you may not have to. Hope that's everything. Good luck !
