Hi y’all, I’m new here. I just bought one of my dream cars, ‘67 Notch with a 273. It was built by my fathers best friend. It runs great, it’s only got about 350 miles on the engine and tranny from when he built it 2 years ago. He told me when he took it apart to build it he found out it’s been bored .40 over. He honed the cylinders, re ringed it, all new bearings and such. He left the cam and solid lifters in place but made sure the lift and everything were within specs and no flat lobes. He had the heads milled and spec’d, re-seated and it was all put back together with new Edelbrock dual-plane intake and carb and ceramic headers. The thing sounds great! Runs great! Looks awesome! But I can’t spin the tires on wet pavement. It’s fairly lackluster in the performance department...what can I do to make this thing GO!!!????

Well if it runs great, probably not much in the way of tuning but you could play with the timing or at least check it.

I'd do a compression check. It may be a low compression setup in which case I'd be looking into a procharger setup.

Welcome to FABO. Wow what a sharp notchback. Like Rocco said, do a compression test and that usually tells if it is a HP engine or not. Tuning the carb can help as well as tuning the spark advance and distributor. What rear gear ratio do you have? Tall tires and a highway gear ratio can kill performance.

Thanks for the compliment. I can’t take credit for the car but I’m going to make it a better ride for sure. Right now it’s a 30 footer. Looks great from 30 feet! Get close and notice the issues...oh well. I love it regardless and I’m going to make it a runner. Thanks for the advice!

I'm a 273 fan. I have the 235 horse in my 66 Dart. It runs good but is no tire burner.

That puts things in good perspective mike. When you think about a 3000+ lb car making similar or less hp than a 4 cylinder car you can't have too crazy expectations but if you want a nice cruiser that's runs and sounds nice it fits the bill.

And that’s about what I have. Sounds great and looks good, it’s a summer evening ice cream runner.

Perfect in my book. Many like more of a hot rod engine and put in something bigger. 318's are easy to come by but aren't a whole lot bigger than a 273 in stock form. You can stroke them to 390+ cubes for lots of performance. 340's are getting hard to come by but are a great engine. 360's are easier to find. They were used in many (most) trucks and in basically stock form can be a hand full. It all depends what you want.

I think I’ll keep it a cruiser for now. I’m one of the lucky sperm crowd in that I already have a ‘68 RoadRunner that is going to be given to me by my father when he is done driving it. It’s a pretty hopped up 383/727 package, and it screams. It’s a couple years away from sitting in my garage however. I can wait... :)

There you have it. A cool Notchback cruiser and a 68 tire burner Roadrunner.

Welcome and nice pair of Mopars!
Im a little biased toward the notch... of course....LOL

As far as the notch stock performance...Future big block set up and 8 3/4 rear sure grip with some gear... and youll be happy you did.

You're gonna LOVE this site.....all these guys have been SO much help....good bunch of guys....except 2 of them (LOL)

I won’t ask which 2! I like to find these things out for myself!! I have been on the site since January, have already learned so much just perusing the threads.

I have been a die hard Chebie fan most of my life but have always loved Mopars. Could never get my arms around one, except the 72 Duster /6 w 3 speed manual that I bought at an auction for $300...it needed an ignition switch. Bought it, trailered it home, bought an ignition from the pull-n-save yard, and fired it right up! And then promptly tripled my money on it instead of keeping it....dumb! Oh well....I’ve found in my old(er) age I’m less brand specific and more appreciative of our old iron, regardless of what the badge says on the hood!

I'm just jivin' about the "2".....stirrin the pot a little!

As for brands - I too had a string of Chevys (Stingrays)....they're cheaper than Mopars....but I finally got my Barracuda I always wanted! I'll keep her until the end.
But as long as it's American muscle, it's cool in my book!

Beautiful car. 30 footers are the best, you can drive them and not worry so much of scratches. Mine is a 30 footer now, 10years ago my first car show I won Best paint. After driving the crap out of it and getting chips and scratches I think I’ll just keep on driving and not let it go into paint shop purgatory.
