Big Block Gear Drive On A Slant?

-
Oil pumps between BB and slant are completely different, although they are both externally mounted.
I picked up a BB gear drive with the same intentions, to see if I could mount it on the slant. I never found the time to try it but it certainly looks doable. You will likely need a cam stop to keep the cam from moving forward without the chain to keep it in place.
Keep us posted.

I already have the cam button figured out. Got one on the way. But, it's really not necessary. Not only does the slant six not have a camshaft thrust plate, but since there are no roller camshaft cores made for them, that means all we have are flat tappets. Flat tappet camshafts are tapered on the lobes. Not only does this make the lifters spin in their bores, but it also acts to push camshaft back into its bore and keep it in place. Lots of engines don't have camshaft thrust plates and they are just fine. But I do plan to run a thrust button anyway.

That's not the point. We all do things some else thinks is rediculus. Hell, I race a slant six. It also has a fogger system on it.

And that thing hauls ***. I've seen it in person. I'm sure plenty of people have seen its tail lights!

RRR, if you think the double roller timing chain needs improvement, why not see if you can do a belt drive?
PS: Do a web search for pics of a gear drive slant. It has been done and there are pics somewhere.

I thought about a belt drive too.

And I've looked my good eyeball out and cannot find any pictures of the gear drive on a slant. I'm like you. I know it's been done.

“Because you can” is a good enough reason to try almost anything!

The gear drive, IMO will be much more in my wheelhouse of financial ability. lol Although, with the belt, cam and crank cogs and both seals I am sure I could make an appropriate timing cover out of two slant covers. All you'd have to do is cut the slant cover's front off the bolt rail and move it to the back. Add a seal boss for the camshaft and weld it all back together. It's only sheet metal. It doesn't have to be fancy aluminum. Even still, I've looked at Jesel, Herbert and a host of others and those parts are not in my budget.

I just figure since I have a 225 bare block starin me in the face with the old cam and crank, I might can play around and make something work with the gear drive.

Yall can piss on it all you want to. This is my sandbox.

I had A flat tappet cam, don’t remember the size, but it was pretty big for a slant. 480 ish lift maybe?

No cam button.

Cam walked away from the oil pump gear and chewed it up.

Toasted a sweet running motor.

I’d definitely run a cam button.

that right there is the best reason!

I was kinda thinkin so.

I didn't think there'd be so much resistance over something that's mine anyway. Maybe I just won't share it when I get it worked out. lol

That sounds so smooth...

Isn’t it bad assery. Lol.

I will agree with others, I’m not normally a very big fan of gear drives.

However, I think On a mild or stock slant, it’s just a cool idea. Because I don’t think valve train harmonics are going to hurt it. But boy will it sound cool at the local Cruze in. LOL

My plan is to use the quite drive, but they still make noise.

The harmonics stuff has been debunked a long time ago. I have no worries there anyway.

Not intending to argue about it, but tell that to the big time superstock racers !!
Of course its ur car too------------

That's not true. You can make a spacer to sit behind the camshaft gear, which is what I intend to do. I'll do whatever is necessary to make it happen, unless I see something that requires a big expenditure of cash. I'm sorry, but I just don't think 1/4" difference is enough to bring out the big wallet. I'm going to find out.

Will the timing cover work w/ an extra 1/4'' or so behind it ??? Not at all familiar w/ the /6 ...

I hope you continue this build Rusty and get that gear drive installed. I am watching.

I like gear drives, I have a Milodon GD on my small block;).

The harmonics get a lot worse when you have monster lift and valve spring pressures, I'm sure Rusty's not quit there yet. LOL

I have (6) virgin sticks of 8620 just itching to be made into round lobe roller cam blanks. I think one has your name on it! LOL

I "just bet" it does! lol What would one of those cost? Do I wanna know? lol

It won't be an "extra 1/4". The slant six cam gear sits out 1/4" FROM the big block cam gear. So "it's already there".

I measured the clearance between my factory cam gear and the timing cover. I only had about 1/4 in clearance. I was measuring to put a cam button on mine.

I've done them for other inline engines before. I'll have to see if my contact can still cut the gear on them, but I can make the blank with no problems. I only have a one bolt slant cam on hand, if you want to be a guinea pig and shoot me a three bolt one, i'd do it for little of nothing because your a fellow Georgia boy.LOL The last Slant product I developed got put in Mopar Muscle and Hot Rod, so you might get famous! LOL
