If it was a VIN, The "V" would be the first letter, as in "VL23....

Just for ***** and giggles, let's invent a VIN here...VL23B8_208889. The "V" is Valiant, the "L" is low price class, the "23 is 2drht, "B" is 225 /6, 8 is '68 model year, "_" is assembly plant (unknown here) and the rest is sequence, or serial number. If it's a VIN, then Mother screwed up the assembly plant digit, and ,if it isn't a VIN, there are too many digits to be a SO number (no letters in SO's). The mystery continues......
