Took the car out for the first time since I disassembled, cleaned and serviced the whole rear axle assembly.
Ran it briefly on the expressway.
Then noticed that a very slight amount of gear oil seeming to have come from the vent.
I pulled the plug and some did come out so I may be over serviced?
What say y'all before I run it again?
Pull the plug and let it drain till finished?
I'm just wondering how one can possibly put THAT MUCH "too" much in from the side hole.

It can happen for sure. I just rebuilt my rear end and filled it with the bottles. I put in about 1 1/2 in and stopped when the level is just below the hole. Not sure if they were quarts or litres.

Is your vent on top of the axle tube, or on the the side where the pumkin goes? Mine is on top of axle tube, when serviced properly will vent a little when corning hard. Popped the vent cap off and run a small hose from the vent tube up a little bit then into a garden tractor fuel filter then a little more hose going down. vents and no oil purging

Air pockets. Had similar issue.
May have to much oil but better than not

#6 is what I had to do.

Golly.
I hope I don't have to retro engineer something.
I'm mean the system should work OK like it was designed for everyday use you would think.
We aren't going to be cornering hard or racing.
I'm thinking to pull the plug and see how much might drip out and than retry a drive.
I didn't answer the question above.
Aren't all vents on top on the drivers side tube?
If the oil is supposed to be below the bottom of the fill hole and not level with it, it should stop coming out sooner or later.
Air pocket?
Rats.

Aerated. Foamy oil takes more space. Even 1” below filler is ok. Most late vehicles have a hose
Up to chassis with a vent cap. Many pickups are open hose.
I like the filter idea.

Oil has come out of my 8 3/4 breather since I swapped the BBP unit into the car. I've changed center sections, axles, bearings and it's puked oil all around the area. I may be overfilling, as I filled until it dripped out. I've tried putting a small piece of scotchbrite pad in there to no avail. I'll add a length of tube and a small filter after reading that above.

Here's where we are to date.
1. I assembled the rear and filled it to the point of oil coming out of the hole..
2. I drove the car on the interstate for a short run.
3. A small quantity of gear oil appeared to have come out of the vent located on top of the left axle housing when I got home.

4. Today car on "level" ground I pulled the plug and got at the better part of a quart out. At least a half quart or more.
It got down to a trickle, almost a drip and I reinstalled the plug.
5. I will again test the car on the interstate and report the results.

489 and original, matching parts.
B body.

When empty, it takes 2 qts. to fill it.
