Exhaust for a 1973 Duster 340 (Pics Included)

..

The VIN doesn't say it's a 340 or not, but puts a direction-of-lean on the sitchiatiown.

No one with any comment on the stripes? As in.....they aren't Mopar stripes is my bet. Not that this makes it gospel, but I've never seen anything like 'em.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade. Just looking for the facts of the matter. The OP is likely paying a lot more money it being a 340 than if it was the 340's little brother.

I guess I'm missing the vin thing.
If it is an H code 73 then it was originally a 340 car.

Next question What is wrong with the stripes? They look like replacement 72 or 73 stripes. More like 72s I think.
Thank goodness they got the numbers facing the right way.
Personally I would crawl under the driverside an confirm that it is a 340 block if I was paying extra bucks for it to be a 340 car.

It's a place to start. If it's NOT a 'H' code tag, chances are better it's not a 340. If it IS an 'H' code tag, that doesn't mean there's IS a 340 in it either.

They look unlike any OEM stripes I've seen. IF they are '72, what are they doing on a '73 car? Another thing, considering the condition of the paint and trim (not existent on the windshield), why are the stripes not checked or cracked? The tape on the back looks like what kind of OEM stripe? Meaning, besides no OEM stripe ever.

Absolutely! That is the entire point. If the OP is paying for a 340 car, it certainly has to have a 340 in it! Personally, I could care less what its stripes look like if it IS indeed a 340 car. He can fix the stripes if he wishes. Fixing a 'not a 340' part? That's a tougher job and certainly a pantload more money.

I don't understand why others aren't trying to protect the guy!!

Untill the op post the vin and looks the car over what do you think you can do beside try to inform him what to look for?
As for the stripes look at Phoenix Graphics to see the different Stripes that were available on the early dusters.
The car has been repainted they put new stripes on it why would they be cracked or tore up if they're fresh?
The trim around the windshield and the back window has been painted black. There never was a duster that came from the factory with black trim around the windows.
The car has been personalized the way the owner wanted it to be.

Good point. I should have mentioned that but someone mentioned headers so I was kind of picturing an upgrade to headers which would be a good option. Pypes is also interested in making a nice pair of 340 manifold downpipes for the duster if someone wants to let us borrow their Duster for a bit. :)

How bout a slant six header? 6 into one for both the early and late A bodies?

I have owned many Dusters and I liked the 72 stripes best.

Headers are gonna be work. Test fitting, dinging to clear steering, painting, chasing leaks, etc, etc...even gonna be work if you shell out for TTI or Dougs. In my opinion headers are worth it. Manifolds are fine and less trouble. It depends on your patience and skill level.

After you decide that, pick your mufflers and buy the Jegs kit. (No tax vs Summit with tax) Any exhaust shop is gonna charge way more to bend up pipes and they may not even fit as well as the kit, depending on who does it.You don't need a crossover unless you just want to be able to say you have one.

What part of Austin are you in? There are two good shows this weekend, Georgetown 7am Saturday morning, and Round Rock 9am Sunday morning. Check motoraustin.com for location info. I should be at both if you want to look at the Jegs kit I used.

Nothing else than.

Besides the power brake comment and a misdirect referencing 340s in general (NOT '73 Dusters), nothing. Until the matter is responded to by the OP, I don't know if it does or does not concern him. It's a huge issue to gloss over IMO and something I would certainly want to sort out.

At this point, THE point being made repeatedly, it's beat to death enough.

C'est la vie

Hey guys!
I am buying my very first muscle car! Been wanting one since I was 5 and now that I'm 26 I have the money! I'm so excited I can't stand it. Five more days... I just can't stop looking up youtube videos!

It's a 340 wedge but I understand the wedge makes no difference but was just marketing? Or it does have some slight variation.

Anyways, about the exhaust. The car comes with absolutely no exhaust and I have no real idea of what I'm doing. I'm in Texas so I am unaware of any laws that I need to be aware of. I know I don't need to worry about emissions but what about loudness? Are there any kits specifically made for the 73 Duster? Any tips or ideas of what I should get? I've never done this before and so this will be my first project. To get it street legal I just need the exhaust and a few bulbs.

So wait a minute....you haven't bought this car yet?

Have you seen it in person?

I won't share the ad, but it gives ZERO info, anyway. No other underhood, trunk, or under pics, either...

I see nothing that makes me think it's a 340 car, or has a 340, and a lot of red flags for 5k. I hope you are taking an knowledgable, objective friend with you, to let you know what you are probably getting into.

The orange instrument cluster only comes from one Mopar. And that is the Hang Ten Dodge Dart.

Or from a can of orange spray paint.

The other question not asked so far is what do you want to do with the car?
If you will be taking it to the dragstrip, and want to go quicker, headers are a big help.
But you can still goquick and have lots of enjoyment with the exhaust manifolds - along with saving money and all around easier to deal with.
I'd say if you're not sure, just have a shop put a set of dual pipes on. When you look at the car, look to see if it has both exhaust hanger brackes in front of the axle.

Thanks for saying.

Again, the only reason I brought it up is to maybe help the OP from getting screwed.

$5,000? :Oh My!
