Hi everybody:

I'm thinking about doing the exhaust on my car that way. The main question I have is how is it for fumes and smell? Any car done this way with headers and a cam seems to sound awesome.

I had mine that way for a while. The only drawback was if you get into a dusty area it blows dust up all over.

Other than that, no issues with exhaust smell here.

You might want to check local laws. I think the exhaust in most places has to exit rear of the axle at least. Cutouts aren't for road use so I guess there "ok". The fumes will not be something you want to gether inside the car obviously... unless you want to take a very long nap.

I did mine. Turns down Right in front of the axle. Sounds better than over the axle and out the back. It’s louder! More better. :)

Many people do it. It sounds great outside the car. Not so great inside the car. On the highway, you will probably experience unwanted sound and drone.

As long as you are not stuck in long periods of sitting in traffic, fumes are normally not an issue.

One suggestion I would make if you are going to try it. Use band clamps. Do not weld or use U-clamps as that is a permanent solution. So if you go to add tailpipes later, there is a slim chance they will fit properly.

With band clamps, later if you decide to add tailpipes, you can take everything apart and put it back together for a good fit.

Very useful advice guys. Thank you.

Mine dump in front of the rear axle and are at about a 45 degree angle pointing out towards the side of the car.

I believe in Ca the exhaust must dump behind the driver seat.

As long as your floor isn't swiss cheese, fumes won't be an issue. If you don't mind yelling at the person next you, go for it - deepening on your muffler choice of course.

jmo.
I think it's inconsiderate, to everyone, but especially to those who spend hours polishing/cleaning their fine autos, just to have someone cruise by, and cover the adjacent vehicles/area with a cloud of dust and crap.

Particularly at show and shines !

My dual 3 1/2" dump right in front of the rear axle, home built mufflers, welded and permanent. Not overly loud inside the car, no drone , no racking off, no popping. It is really loud when I pass a car. Don't travel on dusty roads/ no problem !
I DARE YOU GUYS TO TRY THIS, AND COMPARE TO OVER THE AXLE AND OUT THE REAR , YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THE DIFF. IN PERFORMAMCE , ESPECIALLY ON SMALLER ENGINES!!

I can't hear all that well anyways... Motorcycles...

I don’t ever notice smell on the inside of my car so much, but when I get home from being around it, my clothes definitely smell. But I think it’s from when I’m outside the car while it’s idling. I have it tuned with a fatter idle and pump gas just seems to smell bad anymore on top of that. But inside the car, I don’t notice any exhaust smell. I have the floors sealed up good too to help prevent that problem.

The bad part as others have mentioned is dust. Any dirt on the road just clouds the car in a plume.

You'll get beat up at the car show. Nobody likes getting their clean car all cruddy from some someones short exhaust.

Mine dump right in front of the rear axle. I think it sounds great and fumes are not an issue. No a/c in mine so windows are always down, probably getting more fumes from all the other cars at the intersection especially the diesels.
Yes, they do kick the dust up, one more good reason to avoid car shows, but not a big deal unless you’re on a lot of dirt roads.

Angle the outlets outwards, works great for clearing a path, and makes a great leaf blower for the yard. On a serious note, if someone gets all wee-wee'd up at a car show because of dust and what now getting kicked up onto their vehicle "for what ever reason", be it an original Sox & Martin Cuda, a gust of wind, or JimBobs Dukes Of Hazard replica....probably should just leave their obsessed upon car in the garage. Yeah, I don't do car shows, would rather do the dragstrips, and every car there kicks up **** nonstop. I think its a deal with it kinda deal:soapbox:

I've been running 3" exhaust and open mufflers at the rearend for a couple of years now and I've had about enough of it. The noise inside the vehicle and fumes aren't pleasant but unfortunately tail pipes are not a simple bend up the pipe and install (read big tires, springs relocated and 67 gas tank). I have some turn downs that I'm gonna install and point them out and down, that should help as a temporary band aid fix. I've never had anyone complain about dust getting kicked up though? Maybe because I don't have turn downs now.

I'll nnnnnnnnnever take my car to a car show. I don't have the guts for it. I'd park it a few blocks away and walk to it. Like an avoidant personality disorder guy would..I can hardly drive around in the daytime with that thing. NIGHT 1- 4 am is fun time!!! lol

Mine dump right at the rear valence, no issues other than dirt, which I try to avoid

Ran mine that way for years. Don't know why there's an issue at car shows, are they held in dirt lots? Got pulled over one night, the cop told me I needed tailpipes. Didn't write me. I hung some fake 12" tailpipes at the bumper, no issue after that. Even had a guy at the cruise spot tell me it sounded better with the tailpipes!
