I plan on using M/T 235/60-15 ET street tires to drag race as I also have to drive the car to the track. Rear suspension is stock dimensions. The recommended wheel widths are 6 1/2" minimum to 8 1/2" maximum.

The wheels I want to run come in widths of 6", 7", or 8"...but not 7 1/2". Should I go with the 7" wide wheels or the 8" wide?

The car in question is '73 Duster. Sorry for the omission.

Thanks!

I would go with 8's just because you can go with a wider tire later if you wish without changing rims again.
A 235 tire is about 9.25 inches of tread contact width and I believe your wheel wells will take 255's IIRC.

Will depend on the rim offset. If they are stock wheels, the 7" Is the correct rim for that size tire. If the 8" has a more positive offset, you can use that one. 8" rims and wider usually have a more negative or reverse offset which pushes the tire to the outside of the fender opening.

The 7" wheel has 3.76" backspacing w/ -6mm offset and the 8" wheel has 4.5" backspacing w/ 0 offset. The car is a '73 Duster.

Do you have the SS springs on the back?
I have a set of SS springs but am debating whether or not to use them at this time. It was recommended earlier (in another thread) to go ahead and use them so I am leaning that way. The engine is a '90 360 that is internally stock. Only think I've done to the motor is a performer RPM manifold, 750 Holley vac. secondary carb, and full length headers.

I was asking about the SS Springs because if you put those on you could probably put just about any Tire you want on there that will fit from front to back which is in my experience at 28 inch tire. Of course I have a 73 Duster and I actually run an ebody width rear end that's about 2 in out further than your stock one. I have 275 60 15s (Nitto 555's- $60 each less) on 7 inch wide cop wheels and nothing rubs because the SS Springs Jack the car up. The Nitto say they want at least a seven and a half inch rim but it is what it is.
I went to Walmart and bought 215 65 fifteen's for the front for 136 bucks mounted and balanced.
When I had Hoosier 28 10.5 slicks and 8 inch wide rims I had to put a half inch spacer in the front of my spring perch to bring it back to make the tire clear from hitting the front of the rear fender wall..

Also I say if you have the SS Springs go ahead and use them. If you don't like them take them back off. Nothing like real hands-on experience as compared to what people are saying on the internet...
