question, I have a 340 Duster 30 over 509 lift cam & all the other goodies, I’m going to replace the stock radiator with a champion 3 core, the old factory shroud will not fit the champion radiator, is it necessary to install the shroud? I know I have the option of running a electric fan behind the new radiator, on hot summer days in Michigan the temperature would be around 190-200 in traffic, will I see a difference in temperature with the champion and maybe a 160 degree thermostat thanks!!

Get a big 2 core radiator. More cores are not better. Two 1 inch or better yet two 1.25 or 1.50 inch tubes are much better.

Get a quality high flow thermostat. The only one I know of is from Stewart Components.

Use a Milodon or Flow Kooler water pump and turn the pump at least crank speed. It's better if you turn the water pump faster than the crank.

Do that, and you'll cool anything on any day.

You should be able to buy a radiator that uses the factory shroud. Use it, unless you can get the fan to within an inch of the radiator. Skip the electric fan.

Of course we 2nd the idea of a big 2 row. It's a little more money than the 3 row but a big 2 row
1. holds a lot more fluid and that almost always equates to cooler temps.
2. The 3 row although physically larger, also is harder to push or pull air through. The gaps in between each tube create turbulence and less air flow.
3. You can mount your original shroud on our radiator so you can save that extra expense.
4. The last thing that you want to remember is that the Champion has fabricated tanks and looks like a hand made radiator instead of a stamped set which looks and fits better.

Chief, If you shoot me a PM, I'll give you a special member price to soften the price gap and make it a no brainer. :)

If you have not bought the new radiator yet, I would get the original re-done by a radiator shop.
I replaced my factory one in my Duster, when I damaged it, the Champion does not cool as good as good as the old factory one.

I agree that an original 3 core will be quite comparable to the Champion. I'd rather see him get his recored rather than getting a 3 row aluminum but Chief's motor is built up pretty good. It's quite possible it's going to run a little on the hot side and since it is not 'all original', the big two row will be a lesser investment and definitely out cool a 3 row copper/brass recore. Adding a big 2 row makes a lot of sense in this situation.

I may hit you up on a different set up for my car, I stupid gave my original away to a guy that was doing a slant to V8 conversion. He bought the engine off me so I thru the radiator in for free.

Use a higher temp thermostat, last thing you want is a slow warming under temp combustion envirorment. The 190-195 degree will put you and keep you in the correct operating range.

I have a Direct Fit Cold case Radiator in my 68 Dart GTS and it fits perfect and I was able to attach my factory shroud to the radiator. We really haven't had any really hot days yet, a couple of 75 degree days and the temp never got above 160. Yes the Cold Case 2 row aluminum really cools. My factory original was shot and she always ran 210 to 220 even on cool days and the cost to re-core just wasn't worth it. Get a Cold Case you won't regret it ! I can post some pictures in a little bit.

Here are a few pictures of my Direct Fit Cold Case 2 Core Aluminum Radiator in my 68 Dart GTS. I painted it black to look somewhat original.

Hey Cold Case, instead of using the standard radiator hose outlets, can you guys build them with a male -16 AN fitting on the top and a male -20 AN on the bottom?

Send Chris a PM at Cold Case he will answer your question. Because of the cost involved I would have to say no, but you never know

wheres about in MI ?
im right on the lake and i run a 408 with a aluminum radiator (27 inch or so, dont even remember) and no shroud , never a problem
