Post Mortem on a 360

On closer inspection, there are 2 cracks in cylinder 1.

I'd sleeve that block in a New York second and never look back. Done correctly, the sleeve will be as strong as the original block, and the materiel of the sleeve will be better if you get the right sleeve.

Secondly, if the pickup turned in the pump, it wasn't set up correctly. There is no way the pickup can turn if the pickup is touching the bottom of the pan, and it should be touching the bottom of the pan.

Seems silly to throw away a block. Any block you end up with will need to be decked, line honed and everything else.

If you look back in some of the pics you kind of see the pick up Mark at the bottom of the pan, that's how I figured it was there where it needed to be. I agree he could sleeve it. Me? I'd rather start with a fresh block for something high-output. I agree on the durability etc of a sleeve, but I've also had a sleeve installed by a reputable shop move .010 down after so many runs down the strip @ 400hp 9.5 comp. Its inside the fire ring.. wouldnt have known it if I didn't pull n go through the x heads...but still, it wasn't done right is all.. but it ending happening..like anything can. Before all else ...I'd be sure of what exactly happened and correct it. No brainer, I know..

I have no idea what has been done to this block as I bought the car as is, not running, parked for 7 years or longer, but from what I'm seeing I doubt it had any big money put into it, just a quick, cheap go fast and hope it lasts build. Stock 360 crank, .040 over pistons, cheap headers, best parts are the 340X heads, MSD, and the Demon carb.
You hit the nail on the head here.
Just so everyone knows, i knew the guy that built the car some years ago and that's exactly how he did things as you described it.
Nothing special such as decking or balancing went into this engine.
He built hand grenades and poured the laughing gas to 'em hoping that they would hold together................lol

we used to take a stock junkkyard hemi, add our heads, cam and carbs and run jr fuel
back when dragracing was fun

In '79 during my first visit to Bonneville I wound up helping some fuel altered guys rebuild their motor in their motel room... even had the legendary bath tub parts washer going...

Jim you've heard the stories of these guys buying Hemi's at the junkyard in SLC, then doing what you did with heads and such, then running 200 mph+ the next day. No time for nothing fancy when you have records to run for....
