DIY Garage ?

I'd love to see the insurance policy and the bill.

U-Haul is 25% of the business.

I think the reason that the armed services can do it is that you basically can't sue the federal gov't.

I might be qualified to comment LOL............

In the Navy I was stationed at NAS Miramar, 70-74. Had a part time job at the station auto hobby shop. I can tell you all kinds of stories. Two of the best (of the worst)

The stalls some of them were somewhat inclined. The worthless civilian teenage relative of management who checked in customers was supposed to filter them.......if you were just doing a tune-up, you could put up with an inclined stall. Doing work on a jack, not......etc

So some guys were putting an engine in a 59--60? Ford Y block pickup. I got out there just in time for the aftermath. Two or three guys were on the back of the cherry picker, extended too far, and it had rolled down into the pickup, and tilted, stuffing the automatic tail right through the windshield, where it was stuck.........AND.............draining ATF down over the dash inside, and dripping down.

One time I went out in the lot and here is a 57 Chev jacked up with two bumper jacks jammed up against the big bumper "projections" on a 57. I just grabbed that kid by the ankles and yanked him right out of there. He was pissed. I told him he could either go check out some jackstandsl (free in the tool room) or I could fix it so he doesn't come back.

Those guys could break anything and everything.......including hammers. We had at least two ball pein hammers break the heads. That was when B&D drills were getting plastic rear housings/ grips with metal gear cases. Had a whole bucket of busted B&D drill motors

The E6 which was stationed at the shop got all sorts of good stuff---and a pair of pneumatic grease pumps. We had two outdoor lifts for oil changes/ grease jobs. One time I hear the pumps "pft pft--pft--pft" and thought "somebody is using a lot of grease" and went out in the lot and here were two sailers, having a contest who could shoot grease "lugies" over the fence INTO THE STORAGE/ IMPOUND YARD. Not only were there sailer's cars stored there, might even be some Captain's car while he was at sea

And these are just some of the highlights, There is everyday stuff I've forgotten I'm sure. Some of it involved bench grinders and other power tools, the oxy/ acet torch, the tire changer, the welder, and other potentially hurtful tools. I've already covered jacks and jack stands

NO THANKS!!!

That is how Click & Clack the Car Talk guys started in the 70s...

Personally, I love the idea. I wish these kinds of things were available more. I would love to see a similar thing for woodworking too. It can be daunting to setup a garage with all the tools, etc. I have friends who use my driveway/garage because they live in apartments/condos and have no space to work on their cars.

I had to word my self storage lease very carefully to satisfy my insurance company but still let renters do minor work on the vehicles they have stored.

Most storage facilities expressly prohibit any work period.

There was a business called "You-Lube" down the street.
As you might expect, it was a garage with lifts, where you rented the time to do your own lube and oil. Not sure if anything else went on there, but it didn't last 6 months.

Again, I'd LOVE to see the insurance policy and know the cost to be insured whatever could happen with against customers putting vehicles on lifts and using power tools and chemicals.
