Yesterday, me and a friend were testing transmission line pressures on Jason’s Valiant.

It was a 4 year restoration project. The build thread can be seen here.

Father, Son, and Grand Father project. 1963 Valiant

Just after shifting into third gear, the drivetrain locked up sending us into a slide on a rural black top road.

I went opposite lock to try to keep it straight, but with the rear tires locked up there’s only so much you can do.

We hit a culvert with the left front and went air born.

We are both ok, just a little sore. Jason is just glad that we’re both ok.

But he is deviststed. Destroyed.

It could have been a lot worse. I know. But after those thoughts passed, I was left knowing that I broke my sons heart. He sacrificed all the normal things that 16 year olds spend there money on, just to put it into his car.

I put up a wanted ad for the fender and valance panel. But any parts that you have or know of someone who has, let me know.

We’re going to try to pull it apart today and tomorrow and survey the damage. But so far it doesn’t seem to bad.

I can fix a car. But I also have to fix a broken heart.

Thank you for listening to my ramblings. Thank you for being here for the last 4 years. And thank you for always being the village that helped raise this child into the great respectful young man that he is.

I feel silly for even posting this here. There are people out there with a lot bigger problems than this. I just needed to talk. I’m sorry for sounding whiney. Lol.

Like all things, this too shall pass.

Thanks. Eric.

The good people on here will find you your parts. Wish you guys well, and this will be a learning experience for your son, too. When you see a well adjusted 25 year old in society, they usually had a burden to overcome in life that only made them more resilient and stronger.

Sorry to hear of the accident - I recently viewed your entire thread and enjoyed watching your son work his tail off and grow up building his car - I am sure he is devastated! But with his Dad and Grandpa helping, he can learn new skills helping with the repair work!

I remember 5 years ago, I broke my ankle while out dirtbiking
I wasn't very happy at the time, but looking back on it, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me

He works at a junkyard. They have many a bodies there. Honestly I don’t know if they have Plymouth valiants. But he could get you suspension parts.

Thank you so very much for the kind words. So far the suspension looks ok. The front saddle looks to have been pushed over about 3/16”. It’s going to need a lot of paint touch ups. Those rocks did quite a number on it. We should know a little more today when we pull the twisted parts off and clean the mud off.

I feel sick to my stomach ……but we’re pushing through.

Thank you again for the leads and the kind words. Eric

Think of it his way. You guys aren't going through it alone. Everyone will be watching the repair and cheering you guys on.

It's a harsh event for sure! But also a very good opportunity for your son to see and learn what you do when adversity strikes, you regroup and forge ahead with gusto.

Any idea what caused the lock up ?

Almost forgot to mention, if you with 20 years of driving experience were barely able to save it, can you imagine what might have happened if Jason would have been behind the wheel?

Dang, sorry to hear that. The damage doesn't look too bad though and with some help here you should be able to find the parts you need.

sucks for sure! but it sounds like you have the right attitude.. "Like all things, this too shall pass." ..and no one got seriously hurt! Lick your wounds and then get on with it - you got this. :usflag: Great bunch of pics BTW.

@Lee Robinson has lots of A body stuff. He might can help you. I've bought from him. He's a good dude.

It's not as bad as you made it out. Yall will fix that in no time.

That’s why we love FABO!

That’s how we’re approching it.

Jason is taking it hard, but the more we pull it apart the better it looks.

Thank you everyone for the kind words of support. They mean more than you will ever know!

Thank you for being our family.

We’re not sure what caused the lockup.

I drove it up on the trailer.

We have been having some low fluid pressure at idle problems we have been chasing. But nothing like this

But we’re pulling the trans to check some seals in the rear drum, so we will check it out while we’re in there.

We are all thankful that I was driving it and not Jason. That’s for sure.

I wish it had been my car. My heart breaks for him.

Tomorrow I’m planing on pulling the radiator and the front valance.

Valance won’t come off. It’s like there’s a bolt hidden under the radiator that we can’t see.

The bottom tank on the radiator got punctured by the brace bolt, but that can be tig welded shut and pressure tested.

I will keep everyone updated as we go along. Thank you so much for the support.

There is a 64 Val at a pick a part in Newark , CA. maybe the local FABO who posted it could help you out pulling and shipping some frone end parts, the fenders looked superb. ITs blue..

Thanks phista. I believe 64 is different where the headlight and core support come together. I’ll look into the differences.

Thanks Rob. I checked with Lee last night. He sold the fenders already. He didn’t have any parts we needed.

Thank you though for thinking of that.

I got a PM from another member in Kentucky about parts.

We’re checking on all leads.

We’re not sure what caused the lockup.

Well, glad everyone is OK, that looks like it isn't too awful bad.

What shifter are you using. Right after I installed my Hurst Promatic 2 I took it for a spin. 1st A OK, 2nd A OK, and then I hit third at 50 to 60 or so, rear end locked up and set me sideways in the road.

I gained my composure, pulled to the side and the trans seemed fine, and come to find out it was. It turned out the shifter cable was adjusted off just enough to send it to reverse.

I made some adjustments and it was all good after that.

At the end of the day, it's just a car and the experiences you've had (and will have) with your son and dad with the car far exceed the value of the car itself.

Keep your head up and tackle one small portion of the project at a time. It'll get done!

Great news!

We found a nice rust free fender from a mopar friend locally!

Just need to find a gravel pan now!

Once we fill the v200 trim holes, and drill the signet 200 holes and corner trim holes it will be ready to block and paint.

Jason also picked up a NICE signet 200 grill from him.

I think Jason is getting his head wrapped around this now. We’re in tune.

I shared this video clip with him today. We had a moment. We’re ready to kick some ***!!!!

To Jason - See, this is why you don't let anyone else drive YOUR car!

To Dad - We've all been there, its just metal. Although shipping would probably kill the deal, there is a '63 valiant 4 door in a Pick-a-Part near me if you guys need anything. It's even red!

I've enjoyed following your build thread, and I'm sad to see the car in its current state. But I'm confident you guys will have it right in no time!

We’re really not sure what happened. The car has a pro ratchet it it, so it’s almost impossible to miss a gear.

My valiant also has a pro ratchet, but with a reverse manual valve body.

Did I push the stick forward or pull it back for third? I don’t think I pulled it back, but I can’t remember. I’ve replayed it 1000 times in my head, but the whole things a blur.

Right now I’m just concentrating on getting the core support straight and the body panels on.

We have to pull the trans apart to check the rear drum seals so we will check it all out while we’re in there.

Man that is so scary and sad and frustrating
The first thing I was thinking was thank God your son wasn't driving!!
I'm glad you are both ok and noone was injured or worse. And I'm glad the car is savable. I dont have any early abodes stuff if I did I'd donate some parts.

Eric, hush up with all the my heart breaks stuff. lol Tell him "suck it up buttercup". In the end, he'll be stronger because of this. He's gone through the good with your dad and you. Now he gets to go through some bad........and make it good again. What a fantastic lesson.

Jason, suck it up buttercup! It'll be ok man! LOL
