I am looking for the correct 1968 340 timing cover and balancer to put on this 1971 340. I have looked at a ton of pictures of what is supposed to be 1968 340's and half of them have the raised timing marks on the right side, and the other half show the timing tab on the right side. Is there any one out there that has an un-molested 1968 340 or anyone that know for sure what cover came on the 1968 340's. Even looking at new one's they show both for 1968.
Thanks
Bob

all original pre 70's have the timing mark on the passenger side... AND you need the right balancer so the timing marks are right ..I had to replace my cover on my 69 and I got an excellent one from a member here!!!! also I believe there was difference in cast and forged crank balancers, the 71 might be cast.

Thanks for the reply, I am very aware of the timing marks needing to be on the right side and also needing the correct balancer, the question is if the correct 1968 timing cover has the bolt on timing tab or does it have the raised or embossed timing marks cast into the cover it's self. This is what I am trying to find out.

Ok my original 68 340 had the cast in timing marks, but my original 68 318 had the bolt on timing tab. I not sure 340’s were different than the 318 in 68. My guess is it was a mid year change over to the cast in timing marks.

I believe it depends on the build date of your car. I have seen early build (1967) with the bolt on tab and later 68 340’s with the timing cover with the cast in timing marker.

Here it is
