Since I figured out the camshaft gear drive situation, I thought I would post about wanting to run a solid roller camshaft in my slant six as well. This will have a few more hurdles to overcome, but I believe it can be done. I already have a set of lifters that will work. @CNC-Dude has generously said he would lend his help and knowledge regarding a core. Now I need to talk to Ken at Oregon Cam Grinders when he gets back in town next week and go from there. Hopefully, he will be able to finish grind for me. If there's anyone who can, I think it will be him, but if not, I am open to other suggestions.

Keep a watch in this thread, because if I figure this out, just like the gear drive, there won't be any voodoo about it. It will all be a bolt together process using easy to obtain parts.

Yeah I work for crower so If you have any questions I will help.

I just might. The only hang up I can see is finding someone to machine the distributor/oil pump gear. I may have someone, but I am not sure yet. Thank you.

Been so long since I've been in the lifter valley of a slant. Will the tie bars be above the block? Or machine for keyway bushings? Will be watching!

Tie bars above the lifter bores just like a small or big block.

RRR, are you doing this for the performance aspect, or being able to run today's oil with no additives?

Honestly, I hadn't thought about the oil aspect. Performance is what I am after. Of course, I will have to have one hell of a cylinder head. @MOPAROFFICIAL lol

Plus, I guess the biggest reason I want to do it, is like the gear drive. I want to do it.

I mean......the sumbitch may blow all to pieces when I start it, who knows? But I will have tried.

Funny I have been working on this very thing also. The only thing that I have seen is oil pump gear since the distributor gear is plastic that should be fine.

I remember a hardness issue with the oil pump gear. Replacements were soft.
Dutra went on n on about it.

As hard as 8620 is when heat treated, that may become more of an issue when using a roller cam.

The oil pump driven direct from the cam is the issue with going outside of the norm with a slant 6. Ported head, sure, long rods and short pistons, sure, 1 carb 2 carb 3 carb..., sure, cross drilled crank 24-7 oiling, sure...roller cam...screeching halt.

External driven would be easier, belt?
Too bad crane doesn't have the coated steel tech incorporated into the slant drive gear.
Roller would be sweet, the extra 20 hp or so would be wonderful.

Going distributorless could a benefit as well. It is the 21st century, so might as well adapt and incorporate all the technology we can.

I ran a bronze oil pump gear for years on my roller cam with no issues. 100 psi of oil pressure and turning the motor 7000 rpm. Later I changed to an external belt driven pump.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't the Cox bros used to offer a roller? I believe they are long out of business though.

Where can I get a bronze oil pump drive gear? I think the nylon distributor gear would likely last.

Oregon Cam has slant rollers. Although they are not very cheap.

Hello?

DD was having them made years ago, don't know if he has any left or still does them or not.

He has run roller cams himself, so a steel one wouldn't have lived long. I think he did some bronze ones as well. Could be wrong but I think I saw on .org some time back where it was mentioned he did.

The only gear that I was aware of that Dutra made was a hardened steel gear

I have been chatting with his son Allen on Facebook. Allen said hid dad made some gears out of brass thinking they would be softer. They're not! He said 8620 billet has a RockWell hardness of 60 and the brass gears were 90. lol SO I am back to square one again I guess.
