Garage cleaning day, wheeled her outside to get some proper photos on a nice sunny day. The pearl in the paint sure is crazy depending on where you stand this car is 100 diff shades of green.

Time for another update. A lot has happened since my previous update,
So here's a little recap of where we currently stand.

Complete Fuel System: Finished and working

Complete Cooling System: Working, Needs overflow bottle

Complete Wiring: Working, waiting on a radio and need to hook up tail lights

Drive-train: Transmission mated to motor, Transmission lines ran, Driveshaft needs hooked up, Shifter and cable/brackets needs hooked up.

Engine: Engine runs on its own off the carburetor/fuel system, just needs throttle cable installed and hooked up to Gas pedal which also needs installed.

Complete Steering System: Finished and working

Complete Brake System: Calipers/pads and rubber lines need installed, Rear brake drums need Fresh hardware kit and rubber lines hooked up, Needs fluid.

Interior Systems: Gauges working, light switches working, Driver seat installed, Need to install passenger seat, coat floor with sealer/bed liner, and then lay carpet.
Need to install all fresh rubber/weather stripping.

Exterior Assembly: Rear windshield needs installed, all door windows need reinstalled.

Got a video of the motor running, before anyone chimes in, the motor hasn't been fully timed yet nor has carb been tuned. Motors just being ran a bit to get the cooling system flowing and make sure there is no fluid leaks.

Should also add, my camera makes it look like the gauges have a horrible glare, there's none at all in person.

Time for another big update!

The car had her first maiden voyage today after the fresh rebuild and borderline nut/bolt restoration with brand new everything mechanically/electrically.
Motor runs very very strong with plenty of oil pressure and no overheating issues in the cooling system.
She left a double set of burnt rubber stripes down the road! She's headed to the muffler shop next weekend.

Wiring: Complete
Ignition System: Complete
Engine: Complete
Drive Train: Complete
Brake System: Complete
Cooling System: Complete
Fuel System: Complete
Gauges: Complete/Working
Headlights, Flashers, Brake lights ext: All function normal

We also have the Brake and Gas pedal installed, shifter installed, driver/passenger bucket seats also installed.
We will be cleaning out the interior of the car and sealing the floor pans with bedliner before we put down fresh padding and carpet then reinstall everything in place.
Next up the car will go to the exhaust shop to get my flowmaster 40s installed and then I have to procure a rear windshield to have installed.

Another update. Front nose and hood totally complete. All electrical components wired and working. Headlight switch and wiper switch mounted on dash inlay panel. Radio and speakers installed and working. I have an appointment Wednesday to drop her off at the muffler shop. Monday Morning I'll be headed to town to get license plates and insurance and she will be totally road worthy and legal, a true running driving project I can take my time and enjoy now that the essentials are done. Ill be getting carpet ASAP and making my own door panels as well as upholstering the cardboard style headliner with some crushed velvet. I also need to clean the nasty overspray off my wheels/tires and repaint the wheels to get everything looking good. This has been a very long bumpy road but one I'm glad to have traveled. 3 years ago I bought this car as a coping mechanism to deal with the premature death of the person I thought I was going to marry. In a way this car saved my life by getting me through the roughed patch of it all.

Also forgot to mention, under dash wiring will all be cleaned up routed and tied down over the weekend. We will also be doing new front/rear shocks.

Wow. I didnt know the back story behind the build. Really glad the build helped you out like that. In a way you helped that car out too.

Just an FYI for anybody building and painting a car that has to use their original "good" wheels to roll it around. Use a couple 50 gallon trash bags over the wheels when priming and painting the car. They are cheap, and easy. then you dont have a mess to remove.

good idea with the trash bags, back when i was doing a lot of salvage repairs i had 4 stretchy cushion covers i'd pull over the wheels/tyres to do the same job. one size fits all and reusable.
neil.

My brother taught me that trick years ago when he restored a 68 Camaro RS/SS. He had Cragar SSTs on it, no junky rims and was doing body and paint. Also taught me this one, when wetsanding a car, lay newspaper on the ground to catch the sanded primer etc. The newspaper will catch the sanding chips, water will filter thru, and your driveway or shop floor wont end up with a mess you will have a hard time removing. I had no idea the N.Y. Times was actually good for something lol.

another is when painting somewhere that still has fuel/brake lines or wiring installed 'mask' them with aluminum kitchen foil. you can scrunch it tight around the parts and it's easy to remove afterwards.

Another little update and some better outdoor photos. Got the Dash insert made for the wiper switch, Cigarette lighter, and headlight switch.
Those will be getting a bezel soon which will be painted to match gauge cluster and glovebox/radio bezels.
Also started cleaning up the nasty overspray covered wheels/tires. Painted the wheels black and left the center caps stock. Cleaned up the tires and used some dye type compound on them. Not perfect by any means but presentable for a driver. Gotta do the last 2 wheels/tires still. Picked up a rear windshield which will be installed after my exhaust appointment and then ill be ordering carpet so i can start the customer center console. Also got a set of Dual hood scoops im cleaning up to be repainted to match the hood.

Finally got to drive her today on a bright sunny warm day!!!!

Next up she's off to get a front end alignment, and then off to get rear windshield reinstalled!

I also ordered the carpet today for the floor and will be making a matching package tray once carpet arrives.

Also, I know 2 of the wheels/tires still have bad overspray on them, that issue will be fixed in the next couple of days as well.

Did some more work on the Dart this week. Got the package tray made, upholstered, and installed along with my kicker speakers in preparation of getting my rear windshield put in. Also Started to Install the Dual hood scoops and 360 badges but I bought the wrong size nuts so they are not yet bolted down.
I also upholstered the factory cardboard headliner with the same material as the package tray. It will get installed once the rear windshield is in.

Looks sharp! I made a new package tray, so I could cut holes for speakers and save the original, this weekend as well. What is the material? Short pile? I have kickers up front but I have Kenwood 6x9s in the back so I can pretend it's still 1987! I bet the speakers are easier to instal with the back glass out. I had to shove butyl tape on the screw heads to keep them from spinning.

its a type of crushed velvet. Very easy to work with.

Heres an option i made for my 67 cuda notchback. I used thin masonite board i cut with a jigsaw. Found some 60s styled 6x9 chromed metal grilles. Sandblasted and primered them. Will paint them black, and cover the panel with spray glued black naugahyde.

Also hard mount the speakers themselves to the underside of the rear deck sheetmetal, and just bolt the grilles to the newly made package tray. This makes it easier to remove the speaker from inside the trunk instead of taking the rear seat out and popping the package tray loose, and helps prevent vibration induced buzzing noises when turning the volume up.

A rainy afternoon in the garage. I thought for sure we were going to have to buy new glass for the car all the way around. All of the glass was covered in a thick milky white haze patina from 50 years of sitting around being neglected. I tried hot soapy water and glass cleaner ext but nothing would even scuff it. I even tried mineral spirits and all it did was make the haze even thicker and worse. Did some asking around and found an old auto detailers trick which worked like a charm. With some elbow grease and good tunes in the background My glass looks as close to brand spanking new as possible. I Couldn't get the old decals off, so I will probably just buy brand new ones and cover them up. Super super happy and saved myself a lot of money.

Almost finished with the new gauge cluster.
I have a wee little bit of touch up to do with a paint brush to make everything perfect.
So what I did here was take an original factory cluster and cut out the back of it along with all the old messed up gauges.
Then I took a sheet of aluminum and cut new holes for the new digital gauges I bought.
Once the gauges were fit I prepped and primed everything then taped it all off in several steps to get the desired effect.
Pretty happy with it especially considering its my first try on something like this ever.
Really excited to see it installed back in the car with all the gauges wired up and working.

Purists are gonna lynch me over this build i swear...haha
