Wow. I didnt know the back story behind the build. Really glad the build helped you out like that. In a way you helped that car out too.
Just an FYI for anybody building and painting a car that has to use their original "good" wheels to roll it around. Use a couple 50 gallon trash bags over the wheels when priming and painting the car. They are cheap, and easy. then you dont have a mess to remove.
My brother taught me that trick years ago when he restored a 68 Camaro RS/SS. He had Cragar SSTs on it, no junky rims and was doing body and paint. Also taught me this one, when wetsanding a car, lay newspaper on the ground to catch the sanded primer etc. The newspaper will catch the sanding chips, water will filter thru, and your driveway or shop floor wont end up with a mess you will have a hard time removing. I had no idea the N.Y. Times was actually good for something lol.good idea with the trash bags, back when i was doing a lot of salvage repairs i had 4 stretchy cushion covers i'd pull over the wheels/tyres to do the same job. one size fits all and reusable.
neil.
another is when painting somewhere that still has fuel/brake lines or wiring installed 'mask' them with aluminum kitchen foil. you can scrunch it tight around the parts and it's easy to remove afterwards. My brother taught me that trick years ago when he restored a 68 Camaro RS/SS. Nice!I'm in Ohio too! Car looks wonderful View attachment 1715329803
its a type of crushed velvet. Very easy to work with.Looks sharp! I made a new package tray, so I could cut holes for speakers and save the original, this weekend as well. What is the material? Short pile? I have kickers up front but I have Kenwood 6x9s in the back so I can pretend it's still 1987! I bet the speakers are easier to instal with the back glass out. I had to shove butyl tape on the screw heads to keep them from spinning.
Car looks great! Great build! Nice having a dash you can actually see.Almost finished with the new gauge cluster.
I have a wee little bit of touch up to do with a paint brush to make everything perfect.
So what I did here was take an original factory cluster and cut out the back of it along with all the old messed up gauges.
Then I took a sheet of aluminum and cut new holes for the new digital gauges I bought.
Once the gauges were fit I prepped and primed everything then taped it all off in several steps to get the desired effect.
Pretty happy with it especially considering its my first try on something like this ever.
Really excited to see it installed back in the car with all the gauges wired up and working.
Purists are gonna lynch me over this build i swear...haha
