early turn cancel cam parts

ok I am sure I read a discussion on here that answered this...but I can not find it after an hour of searching so I will ask.
replacing the turn signal cancel cam in the 66.
The part came with the two small metal "retainers". I figured it would be obvious during removal the location for them to be replaced... I was wrong.
Ideas? not used in my application?

not used, though some people use it as a washer for the little hex screw that holds it on.

Thanks.. that's what I thought I read but my memory is... compromised as they say!
