Sonny's Racing/Bear Performance Release 811 cid Mountain Motor Mopar

When the legendary Hemi™ engine was making waves back in the 1960’s it was called the “elephant engine” because of its sheer size and power. Today, the elephant has gone to the mountain as seen with the announcement of this mammoth new 811 cubic inch Chrysler Hemi engine.

With a 5.000 bore center, 12.000 inch deck height and 811 cubic inches of displacement, this engine is significantly larger – and more powerful – than the 426 Hemi which represented the high water mark of the engine series. Not only is this engine nearly 50% larger, it’s also much more powerful as seen by its 1,700 hp as compared the smaller Hemi’s original 425 hp factory rating.

Bear’s Performance of Ontario, Canada provided the raw head casting which was prepped & assembled by Sonny’s Racing Engines & Components. The latter finished the project by utilizing these heads with their tried and true mountain motor engine combination.

The engine is legal for use in categories such as IHRA Pro Stock, which is an outgrowth of the original factory hot rods from the golden age of drag racing. In this particular case, this 811 Hemi was assembled for a specific customer who will run it in Top Sportsman throughout the country in 2008.

My guess is it's either Sonny Leonard, John Kaase, Gene Fulton based 5 inch bore center or larger engine (loosely Chevy or Ford based, in name only) with valve covers available for whatever sponsor can be had. Stuff like this starts life in CADCOM software and goes straight to a 5 or 6 axis multi head CNC machining center, and 800 cubic inches is the low side of normal. I am assuming this is XDRL or the like instead of regular NHRA competition.

I would love to see the wizardry in the port and chamber work in those heads, you probably have to sign a waiver when you buy that monster that everything inside is proprietary...

Finally watched the video, reminds of Johnson/Geoffrion in 1994. If I had been the starter, I wouldn't have been capable with nearly as much patience as these two starters did. I really don't think I would have made it past a minute before fouling them both out...

I would have disqualified both of them in under a minute. You can't let that stand if you have an entire event to run.

So both these guys were just pig headed and didnt want to stage before the other?

Some prefer to stage last, I was one of those guys. I guess both of these drivers preferred the same thing. But there is a limit. The starter is suppose to control this BS.

Everyone prefers to be "last", and that's the issue. It's a head game. You wait, the pressure builds, and one person get's out of their routine and pissed, and that can affect their reactions. That's why it's not up to the drivers - it's up to the starter. He should have backed them both down or DQ'd both of them. Period. You also have the cars behind them in the box or lanes getting hot. Drivers getting hot. if it's a real event you have TV cameras. It's just stupid. It's a clear sign neither driver felt they could legitimately win.

But now we have 4 minutes of radical idle to loop and replay all afternoon....... with just under a 5second roar at the end......shiver Me timbers Darlin'.

I didn`t watch the video , but the first thing that came to mind was, the hotter a gen 2 hemi gets , the more h.p-. it makes----too a certain point !
The heads look like they are exact copies of the most recent pro stock hemi heads . ????/ Twisted , in stead of opposing valve layout can run bigger valves .
