Hello everyone, was looking for some opinions. I picked up a new in box 8534 MSD pro billet non vacuum distributer for $100 . couldn't resist price. but need an ignion box and coil. was wondering if i could get away with putting gm hei module in and coil. or should i get summit box and coil,or just get a plug and play distributer and sell the msd . motor is a 318 magnum 30 over with airgap comp cam 210/220 512 lift also not sure if a distributer with vacuum advance might be better better with a vacuum advance

You could get away with stock ignition, but just my opinion. I am running a 525 hp big block with Mancini electronic conversion kit chrome box. Pulls hard through 6500 with no issues.

What kind of vacuum are you pulling at idle? Any vacuum advance will need a little work for a long duration cam.

motor is still on stand not in car yet, but lobes are at 112 so vacuum should be good , just putting last of pieces together for motor swap

Get a 6Al box and coil been running these systems on several cars for years..NEVER had an issue..

I have had 2 die on me. May Suddenly Die and there is nothing you can do out on the road unless you stash another box in the trunk. Why do you think they run them in pairs? I've never had a Mallory box fail...? My boating friend says all the big boats that run MSD have 2 boxes too. Hard to walk home from he middle of a lake or river.

I’ve gone through an easy dozen MSD boxes, all but 1 have failed.
I Chrysler Chrome box or a FBO Chrome box have performed excellent throughout the years with no failures.

The 1 & only 1 working MSD box I have working has been going for many years and works excellent in the mileage getter department for the Hwy driven car that see’s mostly low rpm. It is there, the multi stroke ability shows merit.

In any case, if your street driving, use a vacuum advance distributor and tune it.
