Let's say I was building a 500/440. Would I order the standard oil pump ? Or the high volume pump ? Or the high pressure and high volume oil.pump 500/440/240/ heads 10.00 comp approx. .674 .296 advertised duration. 5500 convert/ with a brake

Ask your engine builder what sort of clearances he is going to use. The larger the clearances then the more volume you'll need. Race engines usually get the HV pump. You can adjust the oil pressure by changing the spring or shimming the spring. The high pressure spring is usually too high so I often use a standard spring with a shim or two. There is no standard answer, it all depends on clearances and how the engine is going to be used. Operating temp and oil weight also make a difference.

I like that high volume high pressure pump you used to could get from MP years ago. I have used a few. They were nice.

Make sure you get a deep extra capacity oil pan as you will drain the stock pan with an HV pump.

thank you Andy. And everyone else. I want and need the correct amount of oil prrssure. But I didnt want to use extra unneeded horsepower either to drive a big pump that I don't , or didn't need either . I'm my engine builder . I've typically used high volume. Just thought I would ask this time. Thanks to everyone .

I usually use hi volume, with stock bearing clearances. Std capacity oil pan. Std pressure. Been known to add an extra quart for drag strip racing, although now I know that may not be a great idea, due to crankshaft windage. Hi volume is ok, use std pressure. Always worked for me, street and strip. Engine displacement shouldn't make alot of difference. It's the RPM range you want to consider. Hi volume is better for racing, as the bearings need it at high RPM for cooling, and there are greater loading forces.

yup

As long as we're on the subject, what are some opinions on the pick up tube size, 3/8 or 1/2 inch for the high volume pump?

Doesn't matter. The block passage will limit the volume the pump can move anyway. Even with cleaning up the nasty angles...
If you think you need an HV pump (most don't), or the 1/2" pickup - use the external line pickup and pan.
