6000 Lb. Capacity Scissor Lift

Does anyone have any experience with this type of scissor lifts? There are several manufacturers and price ranges ($1600-$2500) out there. They all look pretty much the same. Leaning towards the HF one because it fits my budget better. Reviews are good and I can correct poor hardware or a questionable weld. Would love to have a two or four post lift but I simply don't have the space-width wise in my garage.I realize that it will block some access to the middle of the car but he rockers are more accessible than the ones that don't use arms. I've got a lot of body work to do and need as clear of access as I can get in the rocker areas. If I needed to, I could lift he car up and set on wooden cribs then pull the lift out to access the trans or whatever. So I'm OK with the limitations I'm aware of, what am I missing? And you can save the HF-China bashing, I'm well aware of what kind of crap they can put out.

Those kinds of lifts are good for body work and wheel/brake work. Not so swell for under car work like exhaust and transmission.

I never have liked those. Too much structure for exhaust and under car details to get crushed on. Plus I can just see my leg or arm get caught up in the scissor mechanism when the lift fails and falls flat. lol

If I had the money I think I'd try it. It looks like solid construction. It seems to work well and the reviews are good. I thought I saw it for quite a bit cheaper price not too long ago. That just probably means they are selling well. Any kind of lift has always been a top priority on my wish list. Go for it!

Yeah, I know it is not the most desirable for center access but I don't have a choice. No way am I fitting a two or four post.

Saw one of these in use this weekend with a 69 Coronet on it and was impressed with how high it could go and the general access. I'm going to be spending more time on the periphery of the car than under the front seats. Like I said, the car can be lifted and blocked up and then pull the lift out to get to the middle.

They apparently were ~$800 ten years ago at HF. Trying to convince my wife it would make a great birthday present.

I have one that I purchased at Barrett Jackson 18 years ago from a vendor and I use it for brake / tire work and lower body work. Works well for what it is. I have 4 post lifts for under car work

How about something like drive on ramps. You can BUILD those

I went with the "Quick Jack" instead of the scissor lift styles. Very portable and gives full access to the drive train. Used it for repairs on the Duster, Minivan and M37. Was about $1,300 through Northern Tool Co. Absolutely 100% pleased with it.

I have the same limitations in my garage gzig5, which as why I opted for the Quick Jack 5000 lbs model. It is easy to stow out of the way when not in use. Give it a look man ;)

Be well,

How much floor space do you have and what's your ceiling height? You might be surprised. There are some pretty compact lifts out there. Another option is to dig a pit. I've thought about that myself for front end alignment and work.

I like the middle access of the Quick Jack, they are lighter and maybe more portable. Cheaper too I think. But for my immediate use the way they block the rockers will be hard to work around. I am probably going to have to replace most of the passenger side. And the scissor goes about twice as high.

Oh I see. I never tried in myself, but have seen some folks use them crosswise under the car. Though not sure that would give you the access you want though. In any case, look forward to seeing what you ultimately go with.

There hasn't been a vehicle in "my" side of the garage for 15 years. It is my machine shop / work shop. I've sold a bunch of stuff so I can give my wife back her side. First pic is when the car came home last year. Second pic is the space I've been able to clear. It's actually got a little more room than shown, and I need to move the bikes. There is only about 16" from the edge of the door to the wall. I had the chance to get a used two post for $700 and had to pass after I took the measurements.
I got a quote to move the outside wall eight feet, which is most the city will allow. $42,000 ain't happening.

and that's why i bought a house with a detached garage in the rear and a long driveway. thinking of going with the quick jacks, myself

That's suicide!

What??? Why?
It depends on how far you lift and what you hold it with. 3 ton jack stands won't get you very far up. If you're going to jack it up so you can put stands to go 2 or 3 feet you need 10 ton stands.

I have the Bend Pak unit. I bought it about 15 years ago for use with my '68 Coronet R/T. Still have and use it. Trans removal and center exhaust can be challenging. I have 2x10's I drive up on to clear the trans pans (deep) on both cars. I did however remove the lower rafters in the ceiling and move them up for clearance. The new opening was double rimmed for strength (paid to have a builder in the family). It can be moved easily and mine is dual voltage capable but I never switched from 110v.At full lift I can easily swing around on a roller seat underneath. It was great for bodywork. The pics should show the expected access. The blue car is the Coronet,Gold and rear axle are the Barracuda

Another option for limited storage-

The Gray (and knock-off brands) air/hydraulic bumper jack.

Especially for our cars that still have metal bumpers.

They can sometimes be had very cheaply because of the demise of said metal bumpers.

I got one about 8 years ago for $125, and another identical one about 3 years ago for $100.

Lifts 1/2 car effortlessly in about 10 seconds.

Place jack stands, and move to other end of car.

It will lift about 4 feet.
