I disagree. In 1985 I totalled my chevelle and the insurance company (state farm) gave me the car and $2000 cash. It took a lot of negotiations because I wouldn't sign off on it for them until I got what I wanted. But I got the car and rebuilt it with the money.

Laws vary state to state. In Georgia, we don't have that option, as I've totaled a few and I could not get paid and have the vehicle too, so I was speaking from personal experience. If a car is totaled in this state, you either take the money or the vehicle.
