Heater core

-
Trail beast, one should be able buy a heater core, that claims to fit perfectly and not have to do any work. Do we buy new homes with doors that have to be cut and fit to work? The box broke because I believed the vendor's claims of a perfect fit. As the tubes pushed through the opening, one did not fit and pulled the metal plate off, stripping the screw hole. As this is old fiberglass, it does not take much to damage it. Hope that helps with your understanding.

I understand the situation just fine.:D

Trailbeast: now that is a really good heater box. You do excellent work. I wish there was a way for people like you to hold a tutorial for people like me who have no experience and for certain, lack your skills. I went to UPS yesterday to return one heater core to Rock Auto (too late on the Spectra) and the girl behind the counter had no idea what a Barracuda was, in car, and had never heard of Plymouth. Anyway, if you post any of your work or how-to's, let me know.

your work is definitely a cut above. I was bragging about it to my Mopar brother who lives back east. I thought my air box looked pretty good, nope. How did you get yours to come out so good? I wish I could attend some kind of tutorial taught by people like you. It'd be worth the money.

My apologies if I've taken your thread, it's just that I'm in the same boat. I am attaching a photo of Classic Industries' 67-69 Barracuda heater core. This is not the Spectra one they carried before. If you go to their website, you can enlarge the pics to see if they match yours. In any event, mine is supposed to be here the 13th and I will let you know if it's a winner

Classic Industries, the bottom tube on my factory replacement, the root beer burper, comes out 2" before turning, the 2 after market no goes come out 1"

Okay, I received the new (#3, now) heater core from Classic Industries. Claims of a perfect fit were overly optimistic and the "correct tube bends" not entirely accurate. But, I could not let Trailbeast down. Someone I managed to get it in. The black plate is not flush at the tube outlet. This is both a function of the right tube not properly bent and located by manufacturers as compared to the stock unit and my less than skilled repair work on the broken out plenum. See pics. And no, I haven't tried to put the front part on, yet.

I had a 65 Coronet which has an odd heater core , I had a local radiator shop recore it and never had any issues .
I'm not sure this is always a good idea but when you're having trouble finding one that fits maybe this is an option . Matter of fact my core needs replaced and after reading this post I may try the radiator shop again and hopefully save myself some grief .

Hoosierdaddy: If you've had no problems, I'd say you have found a great solution. I managed to get my to fit but, considering all I went through, and how many heater cores I ended up with, I'll bet your solution is more cost effective as well. I salute you!

I bought three heater cores, from Rock Auto, Classic, and another vendor, for my 73 Sport. None fit. I finally ended up carrying the old core and the new one to my local radiator shop and had them bend and re-solder the tubes on the new one to match the old one.
