Just did a filter and gasket change, there was a coating of material in the pan and a little clump right under the filter, is this acceptable?

1971, swinger 318. Unknown service history, shows ~60k miles.

What color was the old fluid, & did it smelled burnt? If the fluid was still red & didn't smell burnt, I'd say you were good to go. Did you leave the round magnet in the pan to pick up the ferrous metal when the drums wear? If not, I would drop the pan & put one in just to be safe.

The fluid looked perfectly red and smelled fresh. The rear band was a little bit loose but adjusted easily. There wasn't a magnet in there, maybe one of those little rare earth magnets would be good to stick on the outside? I got a lubelocker gasket so I could drop the pan if I need. It was just enough coating to dull the inside finish and a clump of crap about the size of a quarter. It seems reasonable to me but I'm no expert.

Yes, a light film and some small particulates is normal. Also, it will tend to collect in the corners so the blob is likely normal too.

What MoparMike said. The magnet needs to be placed as far from the filter as possible so the ferrous particulates will be pulled away from the filter.
