I'm not a machinist or metallurgist but was wondering ... other than cost couldn't a brake drum be machined from billet steel / iron?

Thoughts?

Pros?

Cons?

for drums that are no longer produced. Not a mopar specific question but might apply some day.

The cost could be $750 to $1000 per drum. Anything is possible with enough money.

there are a few specialty that are making aluminum drums but none for mopar that I know of.
It seems like it should not be too involed.

or maybe just reline exhisting drums?

My question has taken sn aluminum turn.

Im asking about steel /iron billet and nothing csst

In that case, other than the cost, you could have billet drums made. My concern would be the metallurgy involved. Would a billet drum hold up to the heat generated?
AND I'm imagining the massive chunk of metal it would take to make one. Should it be heat treated? I don't know.

If you need small bolt pattern drums you could redrill the 4.5 pattern drums.

There is said to be difference in the depth between SBP and LBP drums.
I ordered axles with both patterns and plan on drilling the drums for both as well.
I might have to turn them on the lathe to remove a little

Different width on the shoes? You can make lots of parts worth with a little imagination and a good machine shop.
