On my 1972 dart, there are 2 metal fuel lines on the passenger side that end right before the front wheel under the hood. one of them is the fuel feed that is hooked to my fuel pump. The other is just sitting there open to the atmosphere and i dont like it just sitting there open. Wondering first, what this other metal line is for and what can i do with it so nothing can get into it and plug it up..? If its a vent line, is it safe to be just open under the hood like this?

Vent line from evap recovery system, it's usually tied into a the right side engine breather along with the carburetor float bowl vent and also the air cleaner cleaner housing.

ah, i see. well, being ive swapped in a 440 and it doesnt have any of the evap stuff anymore, what could i do with that open line besides leave it open? could i run a rubber hose from it up to a mini breather or something?

That second line IS the fuel tank vent. It originally was part of the carbon canister vent evap controls. Go to MyMopar and download yourself a service manual. That one and several others there came from the guys right here. Info on that system in in the chapter 9 fuel, and the ??24 or whatever "Emissions" towards the back

It makes a nice return line if you ever go to an efi setup

Here’s a fuel filter with return line that I use on my six pack.

First, I see your question has been answered. But let me just add this. Thank you for giving enough information for your question to be answered. Usually, there's no make model or anything else. We're just "supposed to know".

Also I agree with using it as a return line, but I would do it whether I went to EFI or not. It will help with keeping the fuel temperature down which in turn will help driveability with piss poor ethanol laced swill you have to run. It will make a difference. If you do it that way, make sire to run the return filter reference above by @Car Nut. That filter has a return nipple with a drilled orifice to regulate the return flow so you don't lose fuel pressure.

I said nipple and orifice.

sounds good, but will it still act as a vent like its supposed to if using that filter with return port?

No. Actually it is TOO SMALL for an EFI return. You MUST have a vent. You really need to look up your specific year/ model and get the service manual as these systems changed through the years. If you don't want that system or part of it, you need to provide a vent. Look up the 69/ earlier cars, they are a simple tube welded into the filler tube. They work well

The line from the tank that goes up under the hood is fine, I just want some type of filter to put on it so its not just open..don't want things crawling into it..

At least you didn't say snowmobile. That wrecks a thread faster than anything else.

You can plumb it into the air filter bonnet, or just put some sort of fuel filter on.
