Heres an option i made for my 67 cuda notchback. I used thin masonite board i cut with a jigsaw. Found some 60s styled 6x9 chromed metal grilles. Sandblasted and primered them. Will paint them black, and cover the panel with spray glued black naugahyde.
Also hard mount the speakers themselves to the underside of the rear deck sheetmetal, and just bolt the grilles to the newly made package tray. This makes it easier to remove the speaker from inside the trunk instead of taking the rear seat out and popping the package tray loose, and helps prevent vibration induced buzzing noises when turning the volume up.
