Ford Exploder 8.8 rear axle....

So what you are all sayin is keep the diffs from the 2 rangers in my back yard? They are going for scrap anyhoo.
A guy has been hinting he wants one,he has some parts i want.

I have a Ford explorer 8.8 with a limited slip differential. I'm gonna do the swap at some point. I have heard of a few people claiming that they have done it directly without cutting the long tube down been iv never actually seen proof. I would think even if it would work you would have to have some funky offset wheels to make it work. IIRC there was a member here who did the swap without cutting it in a barracuda.

Offset gear housing affects nothing. Like a driveline pinion angle is up/down, it will work the same side to side.
Only thing is driveshaft will be to one side of the tunnel.

You have to consider a gen2 barracuda or a duster can accommodate a slightly wider rear end than a dart.

The barracuda and duster has quarter panels that flare out. The dart and scamp have flat body lines and the clearance is not near as much as a duster or barracuda. My valiant is an early A and like any dart, not as wide of body. That is why I got a pre 1993 ranger rear for it which is almost 2 inches narrower than stock A body. Now my cop wheels might fit.

Many people do the Ford 8.8 swap. Search for posts w/ photos. Not just Mopar, I was talking w/ some guys at work into rodding and one did that on a 60's Chevy. The advantage is that you grab a 2nd short axle so you won't have to fool with having a shop shorten the axle. You cut the longer tube to match the short one and it is perfect for an A-body and cutting and welding the tube might be possible at home. Problem is it might only fit a 1967+ A-body which I think is ~1" wider, but research. So common that you might find most of the short axles missing in the junkyards.

I agree RRR, I see no point in you swapping to 8.8 if you have to redrill the drums. I think the 7 1/4 will hold up just fine.

"I guess" I'm gonna find out. lol It's in good shape now, I see no reason why it won't last. I THOUGHT about swapping in an A230 3 speed at some point, but the transmission in it is in good shape too so it's gonna stay.

If a brick is frozen onto the driveway try and push or pull it free, not happening. Next gently tap the brick with a hammer... there it is free. Same thing with rears
breaking, if your careful not to shock load it will last.
