They make little-kid-sized dust masks and respirators. I bought some for my boys years ago when they wanted to do exactly what mini-Matt is doing. You'll have to look around online for them, and they are more expensive than the adult-sized ones, but they will fit his face a lot better, which means his lungs are better protected.
