The spring is an "over-center" spring. Applying the clutch- as you press the pedal down and pass the "over-center" point, the spring is now assisting your effort in applying the clutch- it is pushing down. Releasing the clutch- the pressure plate springs push the linkage and pedal back up to that "over center" point where that spring is now aiding the return of the pedal to its stop position. This may seem complicated but is designed to work with a Borg and Beck clutch. If you install a diaphragm clutch, then you remove the "over center" spring.
