1966 Dodge Dart 8 cyl. Battery has been moved to the trunk.
Im going to be upgrading to a one wire 100 amp alt. I am currently using a 2 wire with a field wire that goes to my regulator. Then from the would go to my resistor and branch off to the ignition switch. I am being told that I will not need the regulator when going to the one wire alt. so do I just run a new wire from the back of the alt to the battery now? And remove the wiring I had previously that went to the regulator? I am doing this because the serpentine kit upgrade includes the one wire alt with an upgrade of output.
Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Hello rod7515,
Most one wire alternators have only the wire that goes from the alt to the battery (hence one wire).
Some one wire alternators will have a parasitic drain on the battery if left connected all the time and or will overheat the electrical components that make it into a one wire type alt if left on and not running.
In racing applications where we use a one wire alt the one wire connects to the battery kill switch so it is only on when the engine is running.
Not knowing what alternator (brand / model number) It would be difficult to provide any info as how to hook it up.
Please provide as much info on the alternator as you can so myself or our fellow FABO members would be better equipped to help with your venture.
Happy Mopar:)

Thanks Aaron, when I get home tonight after 9 here on east coast I will get more info. I also have a battery kill on mine to make the NHRA happy!

i'm surprised the serpentine kit manufacturer that supplied the alt doesn't have instructions on installing it :realcrazy: what kit?

As I recall, one wire alternators have a drain of about 75 microamps all the time. This in not much, but will drain a battery over enough time. I ran into this with my boat. If I didn’t unhook the battery it would go dead in about 3 weeks if it hadn’t been started. Not normally an issue with cars that are driven frequently.

You don’t need the regulator because one wire alternators have the regulator built in. This is what is drawing the current mentioned.

Make sure you have a large enough wire to handle the additional current. I like running the wire in a piece of fuel line to make sure it doesn’t short to the frame. Big wire shorted with no fuse = big fire.

Im going to have to put the one wire alternator on the back burner because it appears that the pulleys arent going to work. the fan is hitting the lower pulley. Im going to be calling the company I got the serpentine kit from and see what they recommend. This kinda sucks because I cant use the kit at this point and I cant put my power steering on until I get the pulley alignment taken care of.

Hello rod7515,
If you post some pictures of the problem (front on engine with all parts installed) depicting the conflict possibly one of our fellow FABO members can help provide some solution with your interference issue.
Vast wealth of knowledge here.
Happy Mopar:)
