Its happened to me already a few times, I guess they are just getting old and brittle like me!

At first I thought the shadow in the lower right of the first foto was an irregular shaped chunk that broke off and flew away. Taking a second look, I see it's just the old rubber allowing a slight tilt.

I had a very hot 327 just ring the outer piece right off one time. Took the radiator out with it. Really pissed me off. That was a rippin little motor.

When I worked in the Hot Rod Shop we had a SB Chevy we could get close by ear but never get it timed right. The outer ring had slipped 1/2 inch.

I wouldn't skimp on a new balancer either. The inertia ring looks in decent shape still with minimal cracking. So that engine is probably pretty snappy. It'll need a decent balancer.

I had one that was slipping around as the engine was running and made a hideous noise and vibration. So I took a great big pry bar and took the outer ring completely off.

Car ran great and the noise and vibration went away. Engine went about six thousand more miles without the outer ring, then I sold the car

I have had it happen to an aftermarket balancer. I think it was a proform. Was working on the car and bumped the balancer with my hand and the ring turned a bit!!!!! SFI balancer now.

I spun one on my old nitrous huffing 360. I went to change the timing and could not find the timing mark. I looked a little closer and noticed that there was a section of the balancer that was unpainted, looked like my counter weight....about 120° off from where the counter weight was........well, crap...lol.
