Distributor: Single Point vs Dual vs with Pertronix vs....

-
There is little to no wobble and rotates freely and smoothly. So if I add the pertronix it won't need to ground wire?

Pertronix maintains I would need #1584 ignitor for my prestolite. I'm skeptical.
Did you give them your distributor number? 65 dual points are IBS 4013 distributors and not the IBS 4012 like they have listed for the #1584 kit. In fact I don't see any IBS 4012 distributors listed in the 2 books I have. The IBS is a Studebaker distributor. The kit may work though. You might just have to try.

I have been to their website. They don't have IBS series distributors listed in their Prestolite choices and when you look it up as per year, make, and model there is no separation for single or dual point, just v8-all.

I did give it to them and I saw the same thing in their catalog. I have a backup 9-1381A for my 318 Barracuda, but it won't fit the Prestolite. They do list IBS Series units under the 1959-1971 Big Blocks (383-440), and for the Studebaker (1584) the one they recommend. Seems like the one for the 340 unit with dual points would be a likely option. But...

Ya, the 340 one is wrong too.

Since according to Halifaxhops I don't need the ground wire for the ignitor I might as well try that when I get there. Got to work out the wiring first with an engine bay kit probably and the

I don't even see the 1383 you recommended.

They possibly can interchange. Have a full part number above the IBS number?

Off hand I don't know but @toolmanmike knows. Stay with the original the III seem to have issues.
Mike and I have been discussing for a couple days. Doesn't seem to be a consensus. Probably have to try Pertronix recommendation so I can return if wrong.

Thanks for the offer on yours, I'll keep that in mind. The shaft in mine seems pretty good so I'll try it first.

What was the original dist cap color, black?

65 black. the change was roughly 68 to tan, still a lot of confusion on that, then there are a ton of different markings on them. Let me find a number for you. Check on amazon sometimes you can get a deal on them.

The ground strap is not hard to replace it is riveted in and has to be drilled out ad hollow riveted back in. Napa had them at one time or just make one. But first see if the bushings have any side play at all and turn the shaft and see if the cam wobbles at all to check it before even going to change the strap. Like Matt said the curve is what it is all about. store rebuilds cover a span of years with a middle of the road curve so it can be good or bad. Same with the one wire chineese they usually are all in fast. Really your call and your wallet what you decide to do. Points will last a long time as long as they are good quality and have a good condenser which seems hard to find in the stores now. Also make sure you get the right points for the distributor also. Verify them before ordering.
Does the distributor need to be disassembled to rivet the ground strap back in?

Well the 1584 is NOT the correct ignitor. If I try another it'll be the 1383. Mean time I got the ground wire replaced so I might throw some points in for now to move on with my process of just getting the engine started.

Does the 1584 look too big? Just curious. The 1383 should work for you.
