Roller LA Camshaft

I have a stock roller camshaft from a roller cam LA 360 that seems to have a long snout even though it didn't come with a pump eccentric. Why did they do this? Can a long snout cam be used in a magnum engine?
 
I think you can with a LA timing cover. Someone that has done it will chime in.
 
Yeah you can use a Long snout cam in a magnum block with LA cover. Almost everything lines up all spiffy like.

well the whole point of a long snout cam is for the fuel pump eccentric. I would have to measure a magnum cover and an la cover and see the difference. My magnum didn't have anything just a bare block, so I build everything with LA parts basically.
So not that clear. But I do 100% know it works with an LA cover. lol

You would have to poke around on the internet to establish a timeline. The cars and trucks got roller cams later than passenger car engines. TBI injection came on trucks later as well. The cam you have appears to have come from a injected 360 (no mechanical fuel pump) a year or two before the Magnums came out in 92. I don't know what you're thinking on doing with the camshaft or whether you are just curious.

I was just wondering if a long snout roller cam (which I didn't even know they made) can be used in a magnum build. I'd like to give it to a buddy for his magnum build, but I've never actually touched a magnum timing cover, so I don't know if it would fit.

It doesn't have much value unless you have it reground.
 
Depth of the "Magnum cover from the gasket surface to the middle (roughly where the cam bolt would be) measures 2.030 inch.
Depth of the "LA" cover from the gasket surface to the middle (roughly where the cam bolt would be) measures 1.990 inch.
This would indicate the Magnum cover would in-fact have even more clearance!

Some of the pickup trucks still had carbs....at least out here they did...
 
Didn't the LA roller cams oil thru one of the rocker stands, one on each side, and the Magnum oil thru the pushrods, Hence I think the oiling holes are different. I've never had a Magnum, so I could be wrong.
 
That cam is the same one that was used in the early 360/300 crate motors. It’s not a bad cam with the 1.6 ratio rockers that came on the magnum heads.

The 318s went TBI before the 360s (88 or 89 to 1992 when the magnums came out). All 360 TBI motors had a long snout roller cam and will accommodate a mechanical fuel pump.
