Venting a little...

Redoing the steering column on my 73 Duster as the original turn signal switch in the column is broken and won't stay locked in left turn. Turns out the plastic is broken. I order a new one...surprised to see them readily available. Don't remember at this time who I ordered it from. Wasn't Rock Auto but a similar supplier.

I get everything back together and installed and I happen to look at the ammeter and the needle is moving back and forth a little to the left. Gotta be either the flasher is on or the turn signal. Come to find out it's the turn signal. But the ***** about it is that it flashes in the up (right turn) and middle positions and is off in the down position (left turn). WTF!

I'm guessing the new wiring is not wired correctly? Looks like I'm going to have to order another one from another place. Recommendations on who sells the right one?

Check grounds on everything related. When wierd stuff happens, it is often a ground.

Make sure the column is grounded.
There is a short ground wire that went from the column to chassis that I haven't reattached. I know where the column end attached but will have to look for the other end. Thanks.

Did you have to remove and reinsert the connector ends of the wires on the new switch? Perhaps you got two wires switched?

The ends have a connector that mates to the original connector of the rest of the system. I didn't move any wires...but may have to.

Thanks.

The other end goes on the bolt that bolts the column to the dash frame. Also the 4-way flasher switch pulls out for the off position. I just finish restoring a 73 Duster floor shift column.

Thanks for info. Interesting that you PULL the flasher out for off...didn't know that.

Update...made sure the column was grounded (attached that short grounding wire). Still same problem. However, even with the turn signal switch in the "off" position I can actually hear the flasher working but don't see it register on the ammeter.
Look on the switch knob and it will have a arrow to show you which way they turn on. Mopar did it both ways.
Mine is pull out to turn on the flashers. Thanks.

The arrow on the button is facing out? May Have the wrong switch. What is the part number on the turn signal switch?

I purchased one of these kits not sure where you got yours from as this was a EBay special from a well known Mopar vendor sorry but this was absolute **** come with a wiring diagram as it had some different coloured wiring , wired up as per instructions didn’t work blew 2 flasher cans had to modify the switch as it would grab when trying to turn off either left or right . Chinese junk got on to @slantsixdan he supplied me with one . Night and day difference. You will pay a little more but the quality is there .Great service and fast shipping as this was to Australia. Hey Dan still waiting on my feed back !

Not that you should or shouldn't get one from Dan (You should:D) but just out of curiosity measure vertically between the contacts on the main switch unit that the spring wires on the back of the part you bought contact, and then measure the spring wires.

My new POS had to have the contact wires slightly bent because it did the exact same thing yours did when I put it in.
I think I had to bend the wire ends closer together, but it works perfect now.

I'll check it out. Thanks.
