Harmonic Balancers

-
I purchased a power bond balancer from autozone for about 200 + and is made in Australia. Looks very similiar to a stock 360 balancer but has a large clip snap ring type lock to prevent outer ring coming off! Also sfi approved looks sweet!

I have a summit SFI balancer on the 318/390 stroker. It was reasonable, but chinese. Inside too close to raised timing letters, but not hanging up close, but too close for comfort. Pulleys didn’t line up worth a ****. Ac no ps crank pulley, single water pump pulley with a .5” spacer behind it. from a 400 and squareback alt with custom bracket. I have an ATI super damper for the 440, about 3x the price of the summit one, hopefully it justifies it’s cost

I ran one that was made in Australia on my 408, my 434 runs a Innovators West damper.

I have a CAT fluid style. Thing is a tank. must weigh 50% more than a stocker but its chrome! :) it worked with my 340 but the alignment is fubar, and fit is tight, like heat it up to install it tight. I understand it has to be to fully absorb the frequencies its designed to supress. I ended up using the outside pulley of a double pulley alternator and shimming the water pump pulley out 1/4 inch. The newer ones have a recessed pulley mount. MY original FluiDamper (real one) had the same alignment problems...that was while ago. Im thinking the dynamic style (rattler, fluid, floating inertia ring) is more suited for endurance racing and it trickled down to street.

I just installed a new Trick Flow #19010 sfi balancer on my 340 stroker and it made a very noticeable difference over the stock balancer. Much smoother now, especially at the higher RPM range when cruising with my 373 gear ratio.
The fit was very tight and the stock pulleys all lined up great. Money well-spent ($175.00)

Are the timing marks etched into the steel or printed on top of the black coating?

I think they are probably printed, which kinda sucks. I took a strip of clear automotive vinyl laminate and laid it over the circumference of the balancer, to protect the markings. You could also apply some timing tape to it right away, as an alternative. That's the only downside of this balancer. But the price is very reasonable, compared to others.

My thought was to add timing tape. The picture shows the markings on the front side of the balancer, away from the reference on the timing cover. I hate that.

I was looking for a new balancer with markings on pass side(pre 70) but cant seem to find any?
I was looking at the TF 19010, you guys happy with it?
Were the marks etched?
Thanks
Steve
I have gotten a few requests on my opinion on harmonic balancers. On most builds, I do not see a great need for an expensive unit. But wondered, who has up'ed the anti on this item to a ATI super damper or a TCI Rattler for there heavier hitting street strip/ride or the race machine.

For street and mild street strip rides, I have not had any issues with more inexpensive balancers.

What would draw my money to purchase one of the above (Or other not mentioned) to my build?

Also, have any of you all experienced pulley fitment issues or alinement issues with an after market balancer?

For myself, I'll (Hopefuley) be working on a 340/3.58 stroker for 372/373 cubes. And then later, my 4.0 arm stroker race mill.

What say you?

I think I'm going to try the Trick Flow one. At the point where this motor is at, I just something stock-ish that will hold together. The 48 year old one on the motor now looks a little worse for wear.
I have the trickflow. My only complaint is its painted, not powder coated. At some point the timing marks/numbers will dull, or surface rust. I thought they were just dirty and used some brake clean on it.....and wiped the paint/Marks right off. :/ dummy me

Edit: Yes they are etched....but still near impossible to read if you pull a mr clean like I did

I've got the Trick Flow for my 340, not running yet but it fit well, it is thick but its recessed so the pulleys line up fine. You have to oblong the one offset hole so the crank pulley will Fit and I clear coated mine so the black paint and timing marks wouldn't wear off. It seams like a vary well made balancer, except for it being painted instead of being powder coated but I guess thats where they cut costs! MobileCustoms, I'm glad to here it made a difference on your 340, hopefully mine will be the same.

Thanks guys, the timing marks are etched on drivers side when at tdc?
Thanks

4spdragtop, The timing marks on my Trick Flow balancer are not etched, at least they don't feel like it, but I did put a few coats of clear on mine, I also taped it up to extend the 0 mark all the way to the back to see easier with the marks on the timing chain cover, but even if I didn't you can tell where they are.

I run a Ati super damper on my 410 sb on the street works very well. Double groove alt pulley, 1970 water pump and crank pulley. Crank pulley was off 3/4 of an inch. Ordered a Cvf 67 to 69 crank pulley 3/4 in shorter and they lined up great! It came with one hole slotted already, so it was a bolt on. Some advice on the flat hex bolts that hold the the cover on the balancer lock tight them! If they loosen they will break! Ask me how I know!

My 388 dirt motor has a Fluid Damper on it. A lot of these cars run an ATI but this was put together in the mid 90's when the FD was the hot set-up.

It seems to be in good shape...no fretting on the crank.

Next time I may try an ATI.

I have also used a couple Power Products dampers on daily drivers.

Don't despair Johnny -- balancers have rubber inside that won't withstand the heat to cure the powder. It's best to paint them.

I don't think anyone makes a hi-perf. balancer with the marks on the pass. side. With today's poor QC at most manufacturers, you can't trust their markings anyway. I just found TDC, and put a timing tape on the one I bought a few years ago, which was supposedly for a pre-'70 340. Sorry can't recall the brand name... could be the generic one that Summit sells. Markings were way off.

Thanks. I know I was being picky with the markings. Summit had a free ship to Canuck land(bout friggin time!). So I ordered the TF and some other goodies. Lol none if which was timing tape....dumbass
